Why are some properties MXML only?

Hi I'm new to the Flex forum and fairly new to Flex so I hope this question is okay.

Taking mx.validators.StringValidator as an example: from the documentation (http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/mx/validators/StringVal idator.html) it would appear that maxLength, minLength, tooLongError, tooShortError are only available as MXML tags. Does this mean I cannot access these properties in actionscript directly? Also it is harder to browse the documentation for MXML tags as you cannot view inherited tags in the same way you can view inherited properties.

Am I misunderstanding something or is this a common issue?

Any feedback would be much appreciated.

      Many thanks,

      Adam
