JETalmage Jan 31, 2012 5:45 AM (in response to simpson246)1. Type Tool. Click. Then type the text. Don't worry about size.
2. Type>Create Outlines.
3. Control Panel or Transform palette: Turn on the proportional link (chain link icon) to maintain proportional scaling.
4. Key the desired height into the Height filed. Click outside the field to commit it.
5. Ungroup.
6. Control Panel or Transform palette: Turn off the proportional link (chain link icon) to allow disproportional scaling.
7. For each character: Select the character. Key the desired width in the Width field.
8. Adjust the horizontal spacing of the individual characters as desired.
Read the documentation so you can learn the basics of how to use Illustrator.
Understand: Unless the font used is actually designed with the characters involved having equal widths, by manually setting characters to the same width you are distorting the design of the characters. This is never a good practice. Such moves are dead giveaways of amateurish work by someone who knows nothing of typography.
If you are trying to replicate a physical number plate, and do not have the specific typeface used on the number plate as a digital type font, you are not going to end up with an exact replica. For all anyone here knows about your number plate, it may have been brush lettered by hand. If you don't have the font, forget the above, scan the number plate, import the scan into Illustrator, and use the drawing tools to deliberately draw the characters.

4. Re: Need little help- Letters need to be 79mm high and 50mm wide
simpson246 Jan 31, 2012 5:53 AM (in response to simpson246)Thanks for the reply!
Regarding the steps you have stated, I'm unsure about the total length of the entire number plate although simply need to be 79mm height with 50mm width.
The gab between the letters doesn't matter and as I'm unsure what this is, I wouldn't be able to work out the entire length.
So the best way is to transform each individual letter to the size I ask?
Yeah, I am looking to design an exact replica of my number plate and do have the official font. Thanks,

JETalmage Jan 31, 2012 6:05 AM (in response to simpson246)I'm unsure about the total length...
I didn't say anything about "total length." I don't know what "length" means in this context. "Length" can be interpreted as meaning a measure in any direction. You said you want each character to be the same width and height.
The gab between the letters doesn't matter and as I'm unsure what this is, I wouldn't be able to work out the entire length.
Are you now saying you want the overall width to be 50 mm? That would be ridiculous.
See online Help about how to use the Align and Distribute commands.

simpson246 Jan 31, 2012 6:10 AM (in response to simpson246)Thanks for the reply.
All I care about is the letters each being 50mm wide and 79mm in height. The gab between the letters doesn't matter etc.
Sorry, I Must of misunderstood you.
thanks,
