Draw a single line version and use offset path.

          -- or --

Draw two rectangles inside each other, draw two circles inside each other, select one of each and use the pathfinder.

Use the Appearance panel and add a new Stroke on top of an existing one.

Look at the appearance panel in my image. Use the bottom stroke as the daker color, mine is 4 points. Make the added stroke which is on top the white or paper color and make it 2 points. You can use the small squares in the Appearance panel to control the size and color of the added stroke. It will view as two dark lines separated by white; curves should match exactly.

There have been brushes – and therefore double-line styles – for almost two decades.

Do you mean something different? Such as InDesign's pretty limited way to handle that?

                    2012 Anno Dominus?

                    2012 Anno Domini.

Please allow me to correct your Latin :-)

Domini is the genetive (ownership) case of dominus = Year of the Lord.

Ah, brushes. Nope -- InDesign is pretty limited indeed (not that I use anything more complicated than a dashed line, every now & then).

I *was* thinking of how I'd do this in InDesign and came up with this: draw rectangle, cut off the four corners with a circle using the path finder, apply double line style. With a bit of help of Smart Guides to position the circles, one minute work.

In InDesign you would have a corner style to create those corners ...

                          the have these
