1. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Noel Carboni Feb 7, 2012 9:34 AM (in response to Byrdie Ethel Pillinger)Good point, I usually just click in a blank space in the PATHS dialog.
You could Control-Click the path that's selected I suppose...

Zeno Bokor Feb 7, 2012 11:09 AM (in response to Byrdie Ethel Pillinger)You can record an action that deselects a path and then give that action a shortcut

R_Kelly Feb 7, 2012 2:59 PM (in response to Byrdie Ethel Pillinger)You should be able to press the Enter key to dismiss the target path if you have one of the path tools selected.
(the inner enter key (return key) just above the shift key)

Trevor.Dennis Feb 7, 2012 3:29 PM (in response to R_Kelly)Escape does it.

R_Kelly Feb 7, 2012 6:22 PM (in response to Trevor.Dennis)Actually i probably misread the question, so yes escape works here with windows vista and cs4 to get the same results as clicking off the path to deselect.

6. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Noel Carboni Feb 7, 2012 6:54 PM (in response to R_Kelly)Hm, I just tried the things suggested...
Pressing Escape works for me in Windows 7 with Photoshop CS5, as long as you have one of the Path manipulation tools (e.g., the Direct Selection Tool) active.
But Escape does NOT deselect the current path for me in Photoshop CS4 under any conditions I can find.
If you find Escape to work in Photoshop CS4, please be a little more specific about what tool is active, etc. I'd like to try to duplicate your feat.
I find Return DOES work in PS CS4, however, as long as a Path manipulation tool is selected.

7. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Byrdie Ethel Pillinger Feb 7, 2012 7:42 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Seems both escape and enter work IF (and only if) the path selection tool is active. That helps... much easier than creating a new path then deleting it (which previously was the only way I could deselect when I have a bunch of paths). But, it sure seems there should be a more direct way. Thanks for all the replys.
By the way, I have CS4 and Windows 7 64 bit.

Noel Carboni Feb 7, 2012 7:44 PM (in response to Byrdie Ethel Pillinger)Did you try Control-clicking on the active path, as in my first suggestion? That will work with any tool selected.

9. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Paulo Skylar Feb 7, 2012 7:57 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)In CS4 on my Windows machine a selected path can be deselected by:
Hitting the escape key - with either black arrow (path selection tool), white arrow (direct selection tool) or pen tool active
Clicking on the Dismiss Target Path icon in the options bar - with the black arrow tool selected (also hides path, ie deselects path from path panel)
Hitting either of the Enter keys - this also hides the paths(s), with either arrow tool active or pen tool
I think I got that right ! The Escape key is my go-to way to deselect.

10. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Byrdie Ethel Pillinger Feb 7, 2012 10:10 PM (in response to Noel Carboni)Noel, When NEITHER the Direct Selection or Path Selection tools are active, and I control + click on the path (in the path pallet / menu ..whatever you want to call it) then it turns the path into a selection. If I control + click on the actual path (in the image), then all the handles, and boxes (don't know what they are properly called appear.
Paulo, Both control and enter work... but only when the direct selection or path selection tools are selected (black and white arrows).
Again, thanks for the help.

11. Re: deselect path in photoshop cs4
Paulo Skylar Feb 8, 2012 5:01 AM (in response to Noel Carboni)My setup behaves a bit differently Noel.
If the path selection tool is active Ctrl clicking on the path is equivalent to clicking on the path with the Direct Selection Tool- it acticates the control handles for the path segment clicked. It also changes the Path Selection Tool tool to the Direct Selection Tool. Shift clicking on the path, however, does deselect the path.

You're right; I missed that as I was concentrating on the PATHS panel.
