Hey all. In my project the background blurs as the objects supposedly "move away" from it. Since it is comprised of many comps, I decided to not use the DOF on the camera since distances are not really correct. I used gaussian blur and it looks okay and sufficiently out of focus, but when rendered out the banding looks terrible. The background was made in photoshop.
Usually I would just add noise to help the banding, but given the style of this video, it would look bad with noise. I tried box blur, but I think i got a similar effect.
Is there a good way to make an image look out of focus without the serious banding?
Work in 16bpc or higher. Still, this may be futile, if you are outputting to a compressed 8bit CoDec. It's just the way it is.
I'm with Mylenium. If you want to remove banding, you will have to introduce a bit of noise. Now, a little noise won't be noticed by an average viewer and, in fact, some tasetful noise tends to make video more pleasant.
Yea, I decided to add some noise to the background and rendered out in 16bpc, and that seemed to help a lot. The noise is only noticeable if you specifically look for it, but doesn't make it look bad at all despite my previous concern. Best thing is that banding is at a minimum
