One way to do this would be to set the alpha of all other objects to something less than 1.

One other way of doing it would be to change the brightness of the other objects, though this would be more complicated than the alpha approach since there is no brightness property that you can directly control with code... you need to play with color transforms.
Another way would be along the lines of what you were trying, but to do it as one shape for the whole svreen requires controlling the indexing of the objects so that the hovered object lies atop the shape and the shape lies atop all other objects.
You could take a similar approach but have individual shading reas for each object that you hide / show as needed.
