5. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
Steve Fairbairn Feb 22, 2012 2:59 PM (in response to simpson246)So what's the problem?
Just draw a circle the size of your wheel and drag ruler guides so that they intersect at its centre. Lock the circle. Now draw one fifth of the wheel (one hole and one wheel nut). When you've done that, option-click with the Rotate tool on the centre (where the guides cross) and when the dialogue box comes up enter 72° Copy and then Cmd+D three times more. Now you've got your wheel.
If you're on Windoze read Ctrl for Cmd in the above.
What was that bumpp thingy?

Wade_Zimmerman Feb 22, 2012 5:24 PM (in response to simpson246)I am curious as to what the purpose of this art would be.
I ws also curious to see how easy it would be and seems like a bit of a pain.
You can do one of the open negative sshpes and the wholes for the nuts and use the transform effect or transform commnd to get what you want but it is a little work.

7. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
gradientmush Feb 22, 2012 5:33 PM (in response to simpson246)the point of this is he wants to use a cutter to cut out an exact copy of it. Doing an outline isn't an issue, but dimensions need to be precise for this to work. secondly you have to understand depth and sretching. the surface is concave as far as i can tell from the pics. one would have to work around that concanve surfacce to get it right so when the outline is placed on the real thing it fits right in. Triccky business. To get the concave part right, my guess is you'd have to leave some extra gap/space between like sortof a fold.

8. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
Wade_Zimmerman Feb 22, 2012 7:27 PM (in response to gradientmush)I don't agree with you at all I think you're trying to make it more than it really is concave or not the geometry is not going to Change and if it needs to be tweak that is easy enough you print a proof on translucent velum a litle spray adhesive it will be fine all you have to do is make it make it larger or smaller you are not talking about that large or severe of a concave surface.

9. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
gradientmush Feb 22, 2012 7:35 PM (in response to simpson246)outta sheer respect that you being a long time member and all i'll ignore what you just said above and not be crude in your face about it.
The wheel cover or rims or whatever you wanna call it are not usually flat, it's concave. this lil adhesive spray and your velum idea is a hacked up job. Besides you're talking about a trial n error method here, which is ridiculous. In a production environment is that what you do to get the dimensions right? You want to do it clean such that the outline fits right in. Ever done xmas wrappings? If you want the edges to fit in, you make a fold so it fits in seamlessly, same concept only this time we dont use folds and you have to curve the overall outline or more precisely stretch from the centre since this is concave.
If you're confident about this, you should prolly send this guy the outline work and have it done using velum and a little adhesive spray, goodluck and amen to that.

10. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
MW Design Feb 22, 2012 7:53 PM (in response to gradientmush)Want the third best option? Whoever does this ought to have a sample rim and this method would require trial and error but at least one is not flying blind. If there is one, working off the 3D CAD drawing would be the best. Working from a 2D CAD drawing would be second best.
Drawing something out to wrap a compound curve, if that is what I am understanding from the above, is not a task for the faint of heart. Even using 3D CAD there is enough variation of the actual cast and polished finished product that it would give me the willies.
To the OP: Good luck.
Take care, Mike

11. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
Steve Fairbairn Feb 23, 2012 1:02 AM (in response to gradientmush)What you are asking for sounds like wrapping a flat sheet of paper round a ball without crumpling it.
Somewhere the paper has either got to stretch, crumple or tear.
So how do you hope to achieve this on a flat drawing?
On the other hand the adhesive films used for decals on vehicles are usually quite stretchy, so I reckon it would be quite all right to draw it flat and stretch the printed result onto your hupcap. You might need several hands to do it but it should be possible, I think.

12. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 23, 2012 1:47 AM (in response to simpson246)Thanks for the replies.
Yeah the wheel is slightly concave but as someone stated, the vinyl will stretch with a little heat or the size can be made slightly larger.
If i can get the measurements of the wheel, is anyone here willing to give it a go and send to me?
Then i'll cut it out and see how it goes and give you all feedback of how it went.
I'll supply before and after images too.
Many thanks,

13. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 23, 2012 4:47 AM (in response to simpson246)Hi all,
I've edited the image posted by the very kind member earlier and added some measurements.
Regarding the length from one side of the wheel to the other, this doesn't need to be correct so if you could make in 10mm or so bigger that would be great.
I will cut this bit my hand which wont be a problem, it's just the rest I hope can be cut by the machine.
Below are the measurements in which I have taken into account all the curves (includng them in the measurements)
If someone could have a go at this, that would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,
EDIT
If possible, I would love if someone could make it so it's not tight against the edges as the vinyl will lift here.
If someone for example could leave a couple of mm around each of the wheel nut holes and slightly smaller for each spoke (not right against the edges)
Many thanks!

14. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
Wade_Zimmerman Feb 23, 2012 7:54 AM (in response to simpson246)My Actual art was very close and some of the measrements that were off were probably due to an interpretation of what lose to the actual measure you needed.
But I trashed the art since you did not respond till today
Although there was not a great deal of time to redo would be a pain for anyone.
And you will have to do more than one output and cut the five secions apart and apply each section what you do is you overla the sectionts when applying the decal then cut through both decals and remove the top or if you wih both parts that overlap and then burnish the butt join. If you are good t this no one will detect the join. zIf you relly want this to be good then you have to do three decals and cut even more overlaps and again do the butt joins.
On your part there is lot of work to be done but applying this as one piece is not going to work unless there is a lot of strech to the material and even at tht it will be very difficult for applying as one piece. And exprienced sign person could do apply the decals in a few minutes but without experience it could take a long time.
I suggest you consider a sign or decal comnay to do this work for you including the mounting.
It would probably not beas costly as say to have one of us dray this art and then the time it will take you to apply it. Probably cos you have by going to the decal company.

15. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 23, 2012 8:32 AM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Thanks for the reply.
Why do you think it would have to be applied in sections? I only want the face of the alloy wheel covered, the inner will not need to be done.
I'm hoping someone will be able to use the measurements I provided then I'll give it a go on my alloy wheel.
I would only need the 5 studs for the wheel nuts, and then the 5 spokes, the outter circle can be cut by hand which i'm sure will help.
Thanks,
-

Monika Gause Feb 24, 2012 2:45 AM (in response to simpson246)Why don't you get in contact with the person who will print and apply it to the wheel. I don't assume you will try to do that yourself.

simpson246 Feb 24, 2012 2:55 AM (in response to Monika Gause)HI,
Yes I will do it myself, I have the machine and vinyl but only ever cut out logos, lettering etc.
I've never and currently don't know how to create the wheel onto adobe illustrator. Thanks,

simpson246 Feb 24, 2012 2:57 AM (in response to Grant H)In Reply to Grant:
The artwork is the Carbon Fibre being applying to the alloy wheel, nothing else, just that.
Why? For a different look and to see how it survives etc.
Yeah, going to drive the car of course.

21. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
Grant H Feb 24, 2012 3:09 AM (in response to simpson246)hence my questions:
Ok: Vinyl WON"T work. ..
1. Becase of the precise pattern nature "carbon fibre" look, if the vinyl is stretched at all (which it will) on application, the look will be ruined. And look just plain bad... (people will think and shake heads at same time).
2. Vinyl (altho quite hardy on the body of the vehicle) lasts long enough, On the wheel it wont ... besides for the centrifugal force the brake dust will stain it.
you can get a :special carbon fibre look made of special material but its very hard to apply on intricate surfaces.

22. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 24, 2012 3:21 AM (in response to Grant H)Thanks for your reply Grank although I don't agree with you.
I've had white vinyl applied onto my wheels for around 10 months with no signs of lifting or anything (over the summer and winter)The vinyl wont be stretched much at all as the wheel surface isn't too curved.
I've also seen companies who specalise in selling vinyl for the face of wheels which must be it's going to work.
I'm looking to do this and test this to see how it lasts, so are going to give it a go on at least one wheel.
Thanks for the input,

25. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 24, 2012 3:34 AM (in response to Grant H)Hi Grant, thanks for the reply.
I'm actually having the alloy wheels sprayed black underneath with 'white' Carbon Fibre Vinyl on top.
Goes with the theme of my car.
I'm simply not looking to apply against any edges (because it may lift then) just a few mm in.
So looking to cover the main centre area with the wheel nuts, each of the spokes and around the edge of the alloy.
That image looks quite good so thanks for that although I'm still hoping to cover it as stated above.
Many thanks indeed,

26. Re: Hi all, More of a request but I'm looking to make an exact copy of a vehicle alloy wheel
simpson246 Feb 24, 2012 3:36 AM (in response to Grant H)Yeah, What I'm after is literally your second image although the spokes covered as well.
Not right to the edge as well so the black underneath the vinyl will also add to the effect.
Thanks,
EDIT : the centre gap will also remain black.
