I've created a graphic in Photoshop that is text some effects on it. The background is transparent.
However, when I place it as a TIFF in an InDesign file it imports it with a white background.
Is that because it's a TIFF?
I ultimately had success placing it as a GIF (which I know can handle transparency) but will that be a good file format for print?
I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like placed as a TIFF.

Try with View > Display Performance > High Quality.
If that doesn't work reimport the image, checking Options and ensuring "Transparent Background" is uncheck.
When you saved the TIFF did you select Save Transparency in the TIFF options? By defualt TIFFs are flattened.
