This sounds like Quicktime is missing the codec in which your camera records. Since few people have every camera model and their codecs memorized, you'll need to identify it.

Never heard of the camera but what format does it shoot? Probably proprietary or highly compressed if Quciktime can't oepn it. You want to open the owners manual for the camera and then maybe hang out on the HP users forums. This is not an Apple QT or an Adobe AE problem but, when you figure out what format and codec the camer shoots, let us know and we'll try to get you pointed yop an application to convert the file into something AE can recognize.
The camera shoots h264 in an AVI wrapper. If you're on a mac try flip for mac to read the files. If you're on a PC you should be able to playback the files. If you have Premiere Pro you may have better luck bringing the files in there and rendering working files in a friendlier codec.
