If I have as the first thing in a 3-column text frame a heading with a numbering style applied, how would I force it to the third column? Usually I would put the insertion point right at the start and press "Enter" twice. However, automatic numbers aren't selectable, thus I can only put the insertion point to the left of the heading text, not the number. When I press "Enter", the heading moves to the second column but "1." stays there and my heading is now prefixed with "2.".
Is there a way around this?
OK I have worked this out myself: apply another paragraph style to the break characters and of course the unwanted interruption to the numbering disappears.
I think the best way to do this is to control where the heading falls in your Paragraph style.
In the Paragraph Style definition, choose the section "Keep Options," and at the bottom of the dialogue box labeled "Start Paragraph" choose In Next Column from the dropdown menu.
Now, every time you apply this heading style to the text, it will automatically place it at the top of a new column. And it doesn't interfere with the numbering.
