    Book Export?

    Images of RMNP Community Member

I'm really enjoying the LR4 Beta and am anxiously looking forward to the full release. One of the things I've been playing with recently is the book module. Even though this is a beta version and I'm not using my main catalog I found myself spending quite a bit of time developing a couple of books. When the full version of LR4 is released will there be a way to export the books I've put together so that I can then import them into my main catalog? Even if it is just the basic layout and text it would be a big help to avoid having to fully re-create the books. Does anyone know if this might be possible? I've used the search feature here and haven't found any information about this.

      Thanks!

LR 4 will import LR 3 and LR 4 catalogs, so, yes.

Thanks for your quick reply! If I don't want to import the entire catalog since most of the images are already on my main catalog would it be wisest to first delete everything I don't want imported or is there some form of selective import?

Not sure.  LR4 final will upgrade your LR3 catalog.  You'll then have two LR4 catalogs.  You can merge them with catalog import/export.

But that may get a bit complicated...if you are using copies of your original raw files and those original files have the same name, I'm not sure how well a beta LR4 collection of images will merge with a LR3 catalog that has been updated. I've not tested that...and if the LR4 raw copies hve a different name than the originals, the only way to preserve the collection from LR4 would be to import the copies with different names. This is not at all clear and is one of the downsides of using beta software–how well edge cases and upgrades will work.

Thanks Lee! I'll give it a try. My LR4 test catalog is a real mess compared with my real LR3 catalog. Perhaps I will clean it out real well before trying the import. I appreciate your help!

Good thoughts Jeff. Thanks. The files will have the same names. Perhaps I should remove all the image files from my LR4 catalog before importing and that way I would at least preserve the layout and text of the books. I can then drop the photos back into place from within the new catalog. Do you think this might work?

It should work if the location of the raw files in LR4 are the same location as the images in LR3. At that point you could export the collection as a catalog but not copy the raw files. If they aren't the in same place, you would export the collection as a catalog and after export, more the copies folder. Then in that collection catalog, relink the missing images (since you moved the raw files) and link them back up to the original location of the raw files. Pretty sure that will work...it largely depends on the directory structure of the original raw files matching up with the directory structure of the copies of the raw files.

If you just copied a bunch of files from various locations and dumped them into a folder then imported them into LR4, that won't work and things will be very complicated. I think it will require some real testing once LR4 is released and people try to deal with upgrading all their various catalogs.

Unfortunately, mine are a mess and are not in the same structure as my main catalog. I may end up just having to re-create the book. One of them is 150 pages with a fair amount of text but that's what I get for becoming too excited about the book feature in a beta program.

                          That's the truth.

There's a trick that can work, if all the images are in the same folder or folder tree in both (you could, for example, move them around in the test catalog to match the main catalog).  What you can do is import the whole show into the main catalog after upgrade, then move the folder aside (rename it or move it).  Then, have LR re-locate that folder but this time point to the matching tree in the location in which it's stored in the main catalog.
