Smartsound has been replaced in version 10 with Sonic Fire Quicktracks, a somewhat more sophisticated program created by the same company.
Sonic Fire should have installed when you installed the program. You can then access it under the Audio Tools button along the top of your Timeline panel.
If you're interested, I show you in my books how to use the tool (as well as every other tool in this great little program).
Thanks for the response, Steve. I know that's where it should be, but the
only options I have in Audio Tools are: Smart Mix, Audio Mix, Add Narration
& Detect Beats. That's why I tried a reinstall, but it's still not there.
I don't know why it's not installing with the program, assuming you've installed both the program and content discs for the program.
But you can manually install it here.
As you can see, you get both Express Tracks (which is free) and a trial version of Sonic Fire, just as with the program.
In PrE's Project Panel's New Icon, do you not see Sonicfire listed?
This ARTICLE covers some aspects of SmartSound products, but when written, one still had the SmartSound Quicktracks plug-in, and Sonicfire Pro had not yet been ported as a plug-in. Back then, it was a stand-alone application, and with Sonicfire Pro 5, was available in two flavors: Express Tracks (free, but somewhat limited), and Scoring Edition (full-featured w/ SmartSound Multi-layer discs). [I need to spend some time with Sonicfire Pro plug-ins and update that article.]
Good luck, and let us know if Sonicfire is not listed in the New Icon's drop-down list, along with Black Video, Color Mattes, etc.,
Not there, either, Bill. It's a mystery! I've now downloaded the SonicFire
Express Tracks from the link given by Steve. I guess it's just that I cannot
use it from within Premiere Elements 10. I'm hoping I can at least still use
the Smartsound tracks I bought previously for use with Elements 8.
Just curious Rev -- Do you own the installation discs or did you download the program from this site?
I have the installation discs. Is there a way of locating the plug-in and
installing it separately?

Try putting the main installation disc in again (the one that matches your operating system). When the installation screen launches, it may give you the option of installing QuickTracks/Sonic Fire separately.
If not, browse the disc and see if you can find the installation files for it in one of its folders.
Success! I realise now that I had explored the Contents disc for the Smartsound, not the main installation disc, using the Browse Disc Contents.
Why it did not install on either of the previous full installations, I do
not know, but it is there now. Thanks to you both for prompting me in the
I'll keep that partial installation in the back of my mind, to hopefully help others, should Sonicfire not install for them. Thanks for posting the fix, and thanks to Steve, for the recommendation.
Glad that your problem is solved. In fact, I would also keep in mind that this sort of problem can also come up.
Just curious though, did you uninstall PRE8. And if yes, (if you remmber) did you seperately checked/unchecked Uninstall Smartsound Quicktracks?..I dont know but, can that in any way be a problem here?
Aniks, I didn't uninstall PRE8, in case there were projects that, for some
reason, might not open in v10. I'm getting to the stage when I might do so
now to free up valuable space on my hard drive, but I will watch carefully
what does get removed!
