Again..."scratch disks are write protected..." error message? - Mac

Recently I've found this error message popping up again, different than a previous post. "The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable. To open this project, the scratch disks will be set to your Documents folder. Would you like to continue?"

On our portable edit system (Mac 10.6.8, CS 5.5) on some occasions when I plug in a firewire drive, open PP, create a new project, I get the above message. When I click "Yes" to continue and open the projects settings panel all the scratch disks I set for the external drive show just as I had selected them, not the documents folder. What gives? Is PP just looking for older projects I've created on different portable drives, even though I 'm not trying to open them (and they're not plugged in)? Seems odd.
