If you tell us the steps you are using, and what happens, maybe we can help, but we're not mind readers.
Export, Save as pdf (for print). Settings as smallest file, size, but have tried others, general settings, no other special settings. Hit export.
Background Task alert comes up; says : 1 problem (1 failure) was found with a background task:
then it has file name .pdf in red in the box.

Have you updated to the ID 7.0.4 patch? There was a background export bug in the first release.
Downloading updates now, hope it works. Thanks for the tip.
If not, come back and we'll give you some ways to move export to the foreground.
I'm having the exact same issue right now? I have Version:7.5.2 installed on my new computer? I'm running Windows 7 OS with 8gb RAM plenty of hard drive space.
I go to export - adobe pdf print - save - choose settings - export
Then I get the error window exactly the same as above.
Background task alert
1 problem (1 failure) was found with a background task
Then in red the file name of the pdf being exported
thanks for any & all help on this issue!
That certainly looks interesting...
After lots of reading the help files I followed some of their troubleshooting procedures & fixed my problem!!
I could always print this 52 page indesign document, but it would not export to pdf with the above response.
I narrowed it down to one of the pdf's that were inserted into this file. There were MANYas this is a catalogue with lots of advertisements, many of whch were supplied to me as pdfs.
Half way thru converting these to jpgs & replacing them I discovered a corrupt pdf that was obviously causing this problem. I have no idea 'why' indesign chose to view this file as corrupt? It appears perfectly when placed in there & also prints out fine as well from a direct print command from within Indesign.
I have used Indesign for only the last 10mths & produced other publications (albeit a lot smaller) with no issues to export or print.so figured this was something wrong with this document rather than the program itself.
Hope this helps someone else as well!
