Book palette doesn't output spreads to pdf

Using CS5 Indesign on Mac OX Lion, when outputting a pdf from the Book Palette and spreads are selected, some of the pages are treated as single pages. In the Book Numbering Options, the Page Order "continue on next odd page" is selected as is "insert blank page." We have tried to turn off these options and insert blank pages manually within the chapters when necessary to make each chapter start on a right-hand page, but the pdf created still treats some of the pages as singles instead of spreads. We need a pdf with spreads (instead of single pages) to show to the client. What is the fix besides pulling all the individual chapters into a single Indesign document.

This is normal where an individual file has single page spreads included. ID does not combine pages across documents to create new spreads.

Do you mean a chapter only has 1  page? That is not our situation. Each chapter has a minimum of 5 pages (or 2-2 page spreads with a single page to start on a right-hand page.) Below is a screen shot of the page palette and the book palette. All chapters appear to sequentially number correctly and a blank page is added as needed to start a chapter on a right page, but the pdf does not combine the blank page with the facing page although it does show correctly in the single chapter document.

            How is this "normal behavior?"

Is there any manual fix to make the spreads appear correctly in the combined pdf?

In your screen grab above, the chapter ends with a single page spread, and the next chapter will start with a single page spread. Those will be output as single pages surrounded by two-page spreads. The only way to get all of your pages to output as two page spreads when you have multiple chapters is to be sure that each chapter ends on a right-hand page and the subsequent chapter starts on the left. In this case, adding the blank page to the beginning of the next chapter instead of the end of this one would solve the problem (Page 1 will still out put as a single, but that's what the reader will see, so that's OK).

Yes, that works if we manually make the blank pages and all the chapters in even numbered spreads. So the Page Order option in the Book Page Numbering Options window does not fix the page count automatically as we assumed. Wow! How disappointing that we have to do this manually. Thank you.

Personally, I think you are wasting your time outputting spreads from the book panel, but that's me.

I export single pages, then set the initial view in Acrobat before sending the file to the client, or if you REALLY need true spreads, use Scott Zanelli's excellent script to place the PDF into a single new .indd file, then export that as spreads for delivery. Thank you the link to the script for combining the separate chapters into a single document. This will help us out a lot since most of our commercial printers won't print from a book file. So it isn't just our clients wanting to see the book in spreads, it is our printers won't accept the file in this format either. The printers will accept high resolution pdfs in spreads so that is how we have been handling it. Thank you for your incredibly quick response and help. We really appreciate it.

This makes NO sense at all. Readers spreads that you would show to your client are totally useless for printing, and would be ah indrence to any print workflow I've ever seen. I've never heard of a printer who wants anything but uninmposed pages, or, for really cheap digital printing, occasionally a request for an IMPOSED PDF, with two-page printers' spreads. These printers' spreads are not what you get from printing spreads directly from ID or even Acrobat.
