John T Smith Mar 7, 2012 5:02 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)Try http://mediainfo.massanti.com/ for more information
But, the screen you show says Photo JPEG
In the Windows world, I think that would be called Motion JPEG
MJPEG http://forums.adobe.com/thread/730396

sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 2:08 PM (in response to Ann Bens)Hello Ann!
Thanks for the reply. You're referring to the first picture I posted where it says - Format : Photo- JPEG, right? That made no sense to me either. Does that mean it was exported wrong or there is something wrong with it fundamentally and it can't be fixed- it just needs to be exported again differently? It was exported from a Canon Vixia HFM30 with iMovie by my brother, then I transferred the files onto my Mac. He's not as seasoned in video editing as I am.

sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 2:24 PM (in response to John T Smith)Hello,
Thanks for your response John. I looked into the link below, it seems like it would help, but unfortunatly I'm editing on Premiere CS4 and it pertains to CS5 and later.
http://www.morgan-multimedia.com/morgan/php/news.php
I just looked at that link and it's for Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later, I have Mac OS X 10.6.3
Thanks for your help though, do you think it was exported wrong on iMovie? Weird that it says Format: Photo JPEG.

6. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
Ann Bens Mar 13, 2012 3:40 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)I do not think the link will be any good as its for m-jpeg and yours is photo-jpeg.
The left screendump is that Media Inspector,
I cannot figure out what the pixel aspect ratio of the clip is
Is there anymore info.
Try a sequence that is 638x359 or just a plain ntsc dv sequence.
I think you have to do some fiddling with the pixel aspect ratio
See how that will work.
I am just guessing here because i have no experience with macs.

7. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
John T Smith Mar 13, 2012 3:40 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)The link I reposted just over an hour ago has nothing to do with Morgan
Media Inspector is designed to tell you what is actually inside your video
Here is the redirected link http://mediainspector.massanti.com/ (above link goes here)

sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 4:18 PM (in response to John T Smith)Hello,
I went to the link to download it (below) and it said it's for Mac OS X 10.6.6 or later, unfortunately I have Mac OS X 10.6.3.

9. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 5:06 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)There was no extension on the first files I posted, there are two different kind of files for the same footage-one that plays with no extension and one with .mov extensions that don't play. here are the info about those, they only play sound on itunes.
Then "Tell me more" in the smaller picture takes me to this link.

When you go to that link, which products mentioned do you have installed?
If none, that it would appear that you need, and do not have, the Apple Intermediate Codec. Or am I missing something?
Since there is some confusion, what is the source of this clip (clip-2011....mov)?
What program were you using to open the clip that responded with the message "you need additional software"?

11. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 5:35 PM (in response to Stan Jones)Quicktime? Does that sound like the right response for the source of the clip? I'm a bit confused.
I'm going to check which products I have installed right now, esp. the Apple Intermediate Codec.
thanks for your help.

12. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
Stan Jones Mar 13, 2012 5:39 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)No, the source is the camera that shot it. Or program that generated the .mov. I suspect that it is a mixed answer, and, if indeed it is the AIC, the source was imported (or whatever process) to an Apple program that converted it to AIC. But that's why I'm asking.
John's emphasis on a program like mediainfo is because it is a shortcut to getting similar information.
Your screenshots in post 9 are good. But they don't include, for example, the pixel size. If you can open this with Quicktime, you can use the movie inspector to get more info.
Quicktime is more likely to be the program that you used to try to open it, and got the message re additional software.

13. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
sensory_overflow Mar 13, 2012 5:56 PM (in response to Stan Jones)I hope this is staying in the right direction; below is the link for the above mentioned codec. But it says it's for Quicktime 7 and I have Quicktime Version 10.0 installed. Wouldn't that be a problem? Honestly I really don't know how to check if I have Apple Intermediate Codec installed. Or shoud I just install Apple Intermediate Codec at the link below?
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL480
It's my brother's camera, I don't have it around me but I know it's a Canon Vixia HFM30. The footage was transferred from the camera to his Mac on iMovie. Let me know if this info is helpful or not.
Happy Tuesday.

14. Re: A video that I shot is pixelated and blurry. I think I have the wrong codec.
Stan Jones Mar 13, 2012 6:29 PM (in response to sensory_overflow)Google says the camera shoots AVCHD, but I guess it doesn't matter, because what you have is the converted to AIC .mov (quicktime) file.
The question for me is whether, with AIC installed on your Mac, you can then edit in Premiere on your Mac.
No, I would not install the AIC for the wrong version of QT, unless someone who knows tells you it will work. (It might, since you don't need it to work in QT, you need it to work in PR.)
Anyone know?
