>trying to edit a movie
What KIND of movie?
Read Bill Hunt on a file type as WRAPPER http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
What is a CODEC... a Primer http://forums.adobe.com/thread/546811
What CODEC is INSIDE that file? http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037
Report back with the codec details of your file, use the programs below... a screen shot works well to SHOW people what you are doing

Once you know exactly what it is you are editing, report back with that information... and your project setting, and if there is a red line above the video in the timeline, which indicates a mismatch between video and project
It could be that you are capturing in HD and you need a solid state hard drive,I have my capture device set at a lower setting and things move smooth with a 7200 hard drive.
Yes, what model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
Which project settings did you select when you started your project? If you've selected the ideal settings, you will NOT see red line above your video clips when you add them to your timeline. Is that the case in your project?
I'm a newbee with adobe element and a newbee to a mac too...I've got a red line over everything even created titles, and imported mov files. But when I went down to standard capture I was able to edit.
Maybe I should start a new post,I've got other problems to using a black magic extreme.
When I tried my webcam (in the mac) it crashed the program with a 'serious error' and now everytime I start a new project 2 empty windows open like a capture window,I tried reinstalling the program, but the 2 blank windows open every new project.
Sorry it took me a while to reply back, I tried replying yesterday, but it didn't post for some reason. Anyways the video camera used was a Hybrid JVC Everio and I tried a link on post 1 and it seems as if I have a "Wrapper", which I was going to d/l the "G-Spot" program but it looks like it supports windows not apple. I think when I created my video, I clicked on "new project" then "Flip, AVCHD, Camera, Phone, Removable Devices", and I remember clicking something that said "HD" and I don't know where or how to undo it?
Here is some info I found on the recorded video's I recorded with the JVC
CODEC: MPEG-1/2 Video (mpgv)
Frame Rate: 59.940060
PLANAR: 4:2:0 YUV
Codec: A52 Audio (aka AC3) (A52)
Sample Rate: 48000 hz
I posted this link... For Mac http://mediainfo.massanti.com/
When you put your video on the timeline, before doing anything, is there a red line?
If you have a red line before doing any work, your project does not match your video
That looks OK,I think the red line should be above the track, all across the top of the track
That vertical red line on the right only shows location... a horizontal red line is when you have a problem
The screen you show says your file is MOD type, I think I have read about problems editing that kind of file
Did you click the FAQ and/or TIPS on the right of the main screen, to see if there is anything about MOD files?
Also, problems even with Premiere Pro and MOD files http://forums.adobe.com/thread/973593
Hit "Enter" after clicking somewhere in the Timeline. This should start Rendering your project (depending on how long the clip is, this could take some time, but it looks like yours is fairly short, so it should be done in a matter of seconds). After the Rendering is complete, the horizontal red line should change to green over your Timeline and things should run smoothly.
