Sounds like you're looking for "Paste without Formatting".
This can be found in Edit > Paste without formatting or with the shortcut Shift+Cmd(Ctrl)+V.
Thanks, Rik--that seems to be doing the trick. I swear I tried it earlier and it didn't work! Is this new in CS5, or is it a preference I need to find and set? As I said, I don't remember having this problem last time I updated these layouts, but there are weird little things like this that keep cropping up on me.
The only thing that's not maintaining all of the formatting is when I plug in UPC text code, instead of the actual UPC bar code, but it only loses sizing, not font.
Thanks so much for your help!
Not sure to be honest. It's been there for a few versions but the defaults may have been changed through the versions. I found this from 2007:
By default, InDesign strips out all the formatting from incoming text when you copy and paste it from any another application.
So maybe Adobe changed the default to maintain styling for future versions and implemented "paste without formatting"?
I don't know when it was changed, offhand, but it is a preference item currently.
