Adobe Help says that Object Library stores all the file info. . . so after spending some time putting often used stuff in there from various sources, they are not really "there". It still shows up, but when you place on page it is blank.
Did I do something wrong? Or is it actually linking to original file (which is no longer available)?

If you moved, renamed, deleted, etc. any of the original files that were placed into the library, then yes. And hopefully you have access to these items, where you could rebuild the library, and leave them in their original location within your system.
Library files do not store the links that you have set up just the location of said links, You have to embed the links and then add them to the library.
Not that I am recommending embeding anything, keeping the links in one location is a far better idea
