CTRL + double click the titles on your timeline to bring them into the source monitor. A regular double click does bring them into the titler by default.
If you want to find out the length of any clip on the timline you can select it and then view the "Info" panel which is in the bottom left corner group of panels in the default editing workspace layout. You can also open the info panel by selecting Window > Info.
You can also put your cursor over the clip on the timeline and wait a moment, the info box will pop up and tell you about the duration of the clip.
Aha! I was looking for the Info panel but didn't see it nested there. The tooltip-style popup is much more convenient. Thanks SO MUCH Christian! One note -- on a Mac it's Command-double-click to open titles in the source monitor.
