When Premiere is acting funny launch Premiere again by holding the Alt+Shift.
That will reset the preferences and the plugin cache.
Then go to Edit | Preferences | Media and clear the media cache database.
Thanks for replying. I have tried what you suggested, however it is still the same?
When I type one line of txet, hit return the cursor goes to the beginning of the same line?
Did the line-break w/ Return ever work correctly, and then stopped doing so?
If you click+drag with the Text Tool, to create a Paragraph Text Box, and then type in that, does Return give you the line-break, or behave the same way?
I assume that you are on a Mac. What OS version do you have?
Thanks for replying!
My OS is windows 7. I think it is the first time I have needed to put more than one line of text in an after effects layer. I am new to CS5.5 - after effects and I'm going through an adobe tutorial 'classroom in a book' series book.
I thought about using a paragraph text box as you suggest but could not find the function in the tools menu.
I have since tried clearing the cache out and restoring default layout but with no joy.
I have used the return key for multiple line text in premier pro and it works perfectly ok.
That Paragraph Text function is built into the Type Tool. One first will do a click+drag, to create the Text Box, and then click inside of that, if the I-beam/cursor is not blinking, to actually Type.
Good luck, and hope that helps for the Paragraph Text test.

Sorry to resurrect an old post, but I ran into the same issue and this was one of the first results that came up in my initial search. So just in case anyone else is having the same issue and comes across this thread I'll type my suggestion.
What was causing it for me was the leading being set to zero ("0"). Select the text box and change the leading to "auto" (or how ever much leading you'd like). This will allow you to hit return/enter and start a new line of text LIKE A NORMAL TEXT BOX! Why this is set to zero instead of auto by default is beyond me, but that's the deal. Maybe some people REALLY dislike multiple lines of text ...? Hope this helps!
Thanks Matt. I had the same problem. Your answer got it working.
