For those of you that still have pre-FM10 workflows, starting in early May, you will be able to create reliable CMYK PDFs from older versions of FrameMaker using a new tool from Jacob Schäffer (Grafikhuset in Denmark) that combines his previous commercial products (ColourChameleon, CMYK PDF Creator, PubliPDF) into a new product called "Grafikhuset Publi PDF". This will be released on or about May 5th, as freeware on his site: http://go.grafikhuset.dk
The announcement was made on the Framers list in a thread on Ventura Publisher files into FM. The original message (see last two paragraphs for more details) can be viewed at: http://lists.frameusers.com/pipermail/framers/2012-April/025469.html
Jacob's tools work by essentially changing the Windows GDI generated RGB values to CMYK or Spot in the FM-created intermediate postcript files before they get to Distiller and provide reliable, accurate PDFs for CMYK (& Spot colour) print production. Note: you can also use this tool for other apps that are at the mercy of the Windows GDI for creating PDFs.
Thank you Jacob!
As a side note, for those requiring automated publishing from FM, the Miramo Personal Edition from Datazone is also a freebie tool that could work together with the Publi PDF tool. See: http://www.miramox.com
With these freebie tools, you can now have an enterprise-class automated publishing system on your desktop that would have run you into a good five-significant digits just a year ago.
