    Trying to get background color to the edge of the screen

      I am trying to create a web page with background color that extends out to the edge of the screen.  I tried the suggestions in a beginners tutorial by David Powers which included the following:

      #container { width: 968px; background: #FFF; margin: 0 auto; padding-left: 10px; padding-right: 10px; overflow: hidden; }

      This left me with a white background around my page.  I took out the width, the padding, and the margin and changed the color to #f1dcc3 to no avail. In fact, I took out everything out of the container definition except for the color. I end up with a nice white background around my colored background. I would love some help on how to get the color to the edge of the screen.
