1. Re: Looking to add some effects to my font please
[scott] May 3, 2012 1:56 PM (in response to simpson246)Type > Create Outlines from the menu.
Of course, you'll have to further edit for characters with counters (abdegr, etc)

3. Re: Looking to add some effects to my font please
Wade_Zimmerman May 3, 2012 2:16 PM (in response to simpson246)1. select the text with a selction tool
2. Go to the Appearance panel and select from the flyout to add a new stroke
2. highlight the new stroke in the Appearance Panel
3. Go to Effect>patrh Offset Path and give it a sufficient offset setting
4. then go to Object>Expand Apperance
5. Lock the type object in the Layers Panel
6 While the offsetted path is still selected go to the pathfinder Panel and select the first one on the top left Unite
You get this

4. Re: Looking to add some effects to my font please
simpson246 May 3, 2012 2:28 PM (in response to Wade_Zimmerman)Hi, many thanks for the reply and looking at your final image, that's exactly what I'm after!
I've got to the step where you say highlight the new stroke.
When I click it, it opens a box with things like weight - cap - corner - align strokes etc.
Is that classed as being highlighted?
Thanks,

5. Re: Looking to add some effects to my font please
Wade_Zimmerman May 3, 2012 2:58 PM (in response to simpson246)Just one click no double click just Highlight the stroke int the appeaance panel one clik but in a area of the item that is not occupied by andthing.
then go to the Effect menu and selkect Path>Offset Path
follow the instructions do not interpret them or you will not be abler to do this.
read what it says only. I know there is a tendency to interpret or to assume it means something other than what it actually means.
If you really needa video I will do one but this is simpl if you let it be simple.
If simple is hard for you then someone else will have to chime in.

I'm up to step 5, I'm unsure how to Lock the type object in the Layers Panel
Is it simply 'object' 'lock'?
Thanks,

7. Re: Looking to add some effects to my font please
Wade_Zimmerman May 3, 2012 3:16 PM (in response to simpson246)Next the the eye in the layers panel there is a sqaure click on the square and it will lock like in the screenshot!
Here is a video
http://www.wadezimmerman.com/videos/OutlineText.mov
I some reallyt good advice read about the panel items to see what they do and the menu items as well just do a search for each one in the help menu. We have all done this here ourselves so that is essentially how we learned Illustrator.
do yourself a big favor and take the time it will save you a lot of time in the future.

simpson246 May 3, 2012 3:51 PM (in response to simpson246)Sorry but another problem.
all has gone okay apart from the only outline I'm getting when importing the text is the outline, very little of the inside of the shapes have been set.
How can I do this please?
Thanks,
SOLVED
Solved it by 'creating outlines' once again.
Thanks
