Does RoboHelp 11 deal with winhelp?

I need to know whether RoboHelp 10 can deal with old win help projects (,hpj) and their output files (.hlp) because i have so many help files in this format and i need to upgrade robohelp version from RoboHelp 6 to RoboHelp 11 and i want to make sure it will open (.hpj) files and convert (.hlp) files to (chm) or webhelp .. one more inquiry; how many users are allowed to use RoboHelp 11 License at a time? My current version (6) allows 3 users, so i need to know about RoboHelp 11, but unfortunately their helpdesk did not answer me nor could i talk to the sales team on phone.

Hi Folks,

I am importing a Technical Document written in MS Word 07 into RoboHelp 10 and appear to be missing a step. After I generate the WinHelp FIle everything looks great however the Index Links and the Search Feature in the *.CHM file point only to the main page. The Toc Links work just fine. I have generated an index using the "Smart Index" wizard and It shows the Links pointing to the Project Home page. When I try to click on one of the generated index links they all point to the "home" page. The Search feature does not work at all.

I am new to RH 10 and I know I am missing something. Can someone show me what that may be?

Microsoft downloads for WinHelp in KB 917607 do not apply to server 2003

We have a user who is attempting to load our WinHelp project on his Windows 2003 server

The procedures in the KB article for downloading the winhelp engine apply only to server 2008 and when he attempts to use that, he gets a message that it is not valid for his server version.

Does anyone have any experience with running WinHelp projects on server 2003?

Please note - this is NOT a question about running RoboHelp on a server

I have a WinHelp project that is developed and compiled on an XP box using RoboHelp 8. The .hlp runs fine in Windows 7, except for the links to websites (HTML Jumps, to use the RH vernacular). The links work on XP.

Any ideas?

Winhelp 4, problem compiling

I try to investigate on a problem that one of our user have with Robohelp 8. I don't know if i'm giving the right information about my problem, so let me know if you need any other information. The computer is a Windows XP SP3 with 2 Gb of RAM.

I got this message when I try to "compile" my .doc file. The long line starting with W:\02 - Biens..... is only the emplacement of the file in the network. I tried locally on the computer (i copy the folder completely, then open it as usual. The only difference is that it's faster to open this way). I also climbed the memory of the computer to 2 GB just in case. I also tried to delete the .rtf files, and remake it, but its the same. Another interesting thing, is that the user have sucessfully compile the file in the past (like 6-7 days ago). But he probably did a bad manipulation, and now it doesn't work anymore... I also made a new blank project, create 2-3 things on it, save it and compile it, and it worked (so i assume the software is correctly installed).

My question are:

Is there any log files that can bring me more information of why the compilation didn't work?

Is the reinstallation of the software can resolve (for this time) the problem?

Is there anyway to restart, if i can say this, the project, but keeping only the doc file? (the project is about 150 pages, so if its possible to not restart it all over...)

Unable to display graphic

I am using Robohelp for Word v8, and after I compile the project the image will not display. I generated a .shg image, and this displays when I compile the projuect, but if I add a hot spot to the image I get an error message saying "Unable to display graphic" where the image is supposed to be. I have the updated ImageAPI.dll file so the hotspot would remember the link, but the image would display with multiple hotspots before the update it would not remember the topic linked to the hotspot. When I updated the .dll file and add a hotspot to the graphic, it will not show up. Did I miss a setting that I needed to update with the new ImageAPI.dll file? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi folks,

We have a WebHelp project and a WinHelp version of the same project, generated in RoboHelp 8 and we're having some weird problems with it.

Problem 1: When the WinHelp project is viewed via a Citrix server, the full text search tab comes up blank gray. When the project is run locally it works fine. Anyone had experience with this or have any idea what it would take to solve it?

Problem 2: When you select one particular menu item from the app (others work), it does not launch the help. Instead you get the following error:

Release of product is imminent. Gloom abounds. Has anyone seen this before? Can you help? Thanks.-Sandy

Will WinHelp run on a 64-bit Windows 7 machine?

We have a client who cannot run our WinHelp products on a 64-bit Windows 7 system. The Microsoft Knowledgebase article provides the WinHlp32 engine download but there no mention of whether this same engine will work on a 64-bit W7 system.

Does anyone have any experience of this?

As a footnote, we have another client who successfully runs the winhelp engine on a 64-bit XP system

TOC flashes inconsistenly

I am building a WinHelp help files for an application. I am using RoboHelp for Word version 7.

When the user click the Browse Sequence button (Next and Previous) to toggle between topcis. The TOC at the left pane flashes. I reckon that this happens because it is highlighting the topic title accordingly. But, it seems very inconsistent because sometimes the highlight will just go down the topics smoothly and at other times, the TOC seems to flash (dissapear and appear quickly) to refresh itself.

I am posting here hoping that someone may have a solution to this.

Help Jumps and Bullet Colours

I have two problems that may or may not be related to each other. The first is that I have several topics with bullet lists. The bullets are supposed to be blue, but after being compiled, there are some that are blue, and some that are black. In general, the bullets that are black have a jump inserted (I have tried taking out the jump, and the bullet goes back to blue). Any suggestions on what caused this and what I can do to keep all bullets blue?

Also, when I select text to insert a jump, and right-click, I no longer get the option to insert a jump, and the RoboHelp tab in Word does not give me this option. Any insight into this?

TOC Won't Display in WinHelp

I am updating a WinHelp project that was previously developed in X3 but which I am now trying to update and compile in RoboHelp 7 for Word. The TOC won't display (i.e., the TOC navigation panel at the left doesn't display) when the help is launched. When viewing the TOC in the single panel window by clicking the Help Topics button, the links do work. There is a CNT file. I tried deleting the GID file (as suggested by Adobe), and using the old CNT file that worked in the previous version of the project. Anyone else experience this with RoboHelp 7?

Hi. I'm using Word 2003, SP2 and RoboHelp for Word x5.01, build 606 to edit a previous winhelp project, and when I try to save the document I get a RoboHelp dialog box advising, "The product is not installed correctly. The RoboHelp RTF converter cannot be found." I can't seem to find any info on this. Any ideas (as Word will not let me save my changes).

Also, I got Word error 1057 (outta nowhere), but was able to circumvent with this knowledgebase article.

Using RoboHelp as a link on a Webpage

Hi. My company recently decided to localize in French and Japanese. Currently we generate WinHelp 2000 using x5. Their plan was to send the raw Word documents to a language translation company and then we would create the WinHelp 2000 project to generate .hlp/.cnt files.

I see that Japanese is not supported in x5, so I'm looking into version 8. But...is WinHelp 2000 a valid output in v8?

(I know we should update our help system to something a little more modern, but that is what the powers that be want for now.)

Please suggest me some solution for following issue.

I created CHM file using RoboHelp 7.02 version. I could lauch this CHM file from my C# application, after closing the CHM file the focus is not set back to the C# application window. I tried similar procedure with the file created using Micorsoft HTML Help SDK, this scenario is working correctly.
Is there any setup that we should do in RoboHelp Project, such that the focus could be set the calling application window.

X7 WinHelp files crashing on compile

One of our locations is encountering this problem: We are facing a daunting task in the last couple of months to work with RoboHelp in publishing our WinHelp4 files for our products. The project crashes when compiling the help files resulting in losing all the changes which we have done for the current sprint and previous ones. I tried researching this issue in the Adobe website and did not find any workarounds. The new tool RoboHelp X7 is crashing with errors not only on my machine but also on other machines. As a result, I had to go back to my old version of RH X5. I generated the compiled help file successfully after cleaning my machine of the window and office updates. I had to re-install the Windows XP operating system twice on my machine to get rid of the new window and office updates. However, this only gave me a small reprieve to compile the help file for a brief time. But once again the same problem has re-appeared and I am totally at my wits end how to resolve this issue with our stated releases in the month of December 2008. Following is the compile error which leads to the project crashing.

"Microsoft Help Workshop has encountered an error and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. if you were in the middle of something, the information you were working on might be lost. Please tell Microsoft about this problem..." I'm sure the error report was not sent to Microsoft. Has anyone encountered this issue, and if so, can you provide any assistance? Thanks very much.

RoboHelp 5 & Word 2003

Below is a macro, which disables the enter key while completing a form, that is contained within a 2003 Word Document. When the document is opened through WebHelp this error is produced: Runtime error 4605 : This command not available.

However, if you go to the WebHelp directory and open the same document no error occurs.

Another note - this same document works fine using Word 2007 via WebHelp.

Help Jumps Converting to Popups - HELP!

Major issue here. I am maintaining a large, nearly 15-year old help system that has thousands of topics and links, and nearly 30 different source Word/RTF files. Suddenly, with no intentional changes whatsoever to my system or the source files, when I compile the project, the jumps that take the user to a different topic are converted to popup links in an entire document, and all of its constituent topics. What is worse is that this behavior is capricious; in some of the documents, when I check their properties, it says the links are popups, but to not compile as such, in other documents, when I check their properties, it says the links are popups, and they do compile as popups.

Here's what I have done and figured out so far: (1) I have checked the styles of the offending links. It seems that a single underlined word compiles as a popup link, and a double-underlined word compiles as a regular jump to a new topic, (2) The offending styles -- and there are dozens per document, thanks to numerous authors over the years and Word's lame handling of styles -- when changed back to the correct style, sometimes keep their style, other times revert back to the wrong style.

I am at wit's end. Does anyone know what to do? Changing to another help platform is not an option.

Does the WinHelp .chm file format not support Bookmarks in the TOC? I get the error message "This program cannot display the web page"?

So, Microsoft have dumped Winhelp. The alternatives as I see it are:

HTMLHelp:
- Will not run over a network (without a registry hack)
- Vastly inferior context sensitive help support (graphics, formatting etc.). Perhaps this has improved ?

WebHelp/Flashhelp:
- Not conducive to a local install (thousands of pages).

New MS Help System:
- Not published ?

Deep joy.... anyone have recommendations on a replacement (application help system) or timescale on the MS help system being incorporated into a toolsuite such as robohelp ?

WinHelp and missing RoboEx32.dll

Created a simple WinHelp and I have 6 IT users reviewing the content. One user is getting a message that the RoboEx32.dll file is missing. He is running Windows XP Pro with the latest service pack. Evidently he has the file - it is not in the System32 directory.

He is now questioning the use of RoboHelp in creating the help files - his concern is that when the help file is distributed further with the application, users further down the line will run into the same problem. He feels that there shouldn't have to be "other software installed just to run help".

I guess my question is - how does the RoboEXe.dll get distributed - with the compiled help?

RH for Word - extra "font" codes displaying when compiling as WebHelp

Hey everyone,

I have a massive RH for Word project (over 2800 topics in 535 Word docs) running under RH X5 (Windows XP SP 2, Word 2003) that we currently compile as WinHelp 2000. As an experiment, I decided to try to also build it as a WebHelp project. For the most part, it comes out fine except for about 50 or so topics. In the TOC, the first topics in several different books have a ton of font names that appear in the content pane right before the topic title.

The "font" codes look something like this:

"Employee ID" is the topic title that appears as Heading 2, Arial 14 pt, Bold blue in the original Word document that contains the topic.

This only happens to the FIRST topic in a book, and it doesn't happen in all the books.

The same thing happens when I compile in .CHM but everything is ok in WinHelp 2000. (Of course, for WinHelp 2000, we're "locking the fonts" after we make changes to any file but before we build, to overcome the problems created by that Word patch from last summer).

Any ideas?

Context Sensitive Help

I am new to authoring and although I understand the concept of writing help files, I am having a problem understanding how to write properly context sensitive help (Winhelp 4) for a Delphi Application. I called support and they told me as long as my topics have map ids, the context sensitive should work. My questions is how and how do I distinquish context sensitive help topics from other topics?

RH6 Updating a WinHelp File

It has been a very, very long time since I updated a Winelp file. Oh, but how I remember those green images that look like a hole in the wall:(

All of the SHG images are there and can be opened with the image editor; however, none of them show up in the Help file...only the green image. I can't remember what causes that, and I don't want to spend a lot of time on this project, so does anyone remember how to fix it. I've even tried inserting new bmp images into the file and they do the same thing.

Two windows in .hlp output

Have been testing the Demo version of RH 6 on an existing help project. When I view the output, the contents are displayed in one window and when you click to open up a topic, the topics are displayed on another window. So I have one Window with the Contents, Index, and Find tabs and when you open a topic it is displayed in a new window. How do you configure it so that the output is just in one window?

When making changes to a topic, some of th links pointing to the wrong topic.

I don't know if anyone is having the same problem as I am. Whenever I make changes to a topic, compiled, and view my changes. The most of the links with that document are broken. What even worse is when I clicked on the index, some of them are broken too.

Please, please, can anyone out there help me resolve or fix this problem. I did a search for broken link on the forum, and not much help.

I'm using RoboHelp x5 and Word 2002 running Window XP. I have also installed it on another machine with Word 97.

Winhelp 2000 problem

I have a Visual C++ application, a Robohelp project that contains Tutorials for the application and
another Robohelp project that contains help for the application.

The C++ application opens and contains a menu which has options to open the tutorial and help.
Both of these work fine.
Within the tutorial there is a jump to the help.
When the tutorial is opened outside the C++ application, the jump works.
When the tutorial is generated with WinHelp 4 and is opened from the application, the jump works.
However when the tutorial is generated with WinHelp 2000, the jump does not work. The hourglass appears brielfy and a winhlp32.exe entry appears in the processes pane of the Task Manager.

Any ideas how i can get the jump working when generated with WinHelp2000??

Duplicate sets of help files in Contents

I'm using RH 4x.1 on Windows XP platform, and have been for several years.
I have a set of individual help files (87 of them) for which I created a master project. I added, via File > New > External CNT File, all of the Individual .CNT to the TOC of the master project. I also combined the indexes via right-click on the primary layout (WinHelp 4) > Properties > Contents > Files included in Index. I also designated the master project as the Master CNT. I compiled the master project.
Problem: When I open the help, as a user would, and get the Help Topics: <project name> window, I get the entire set of individual help files (as I should), represented as books, from which I can open any one book and get the contents of that file, BUT the entire set is repeated 9 times within the Help Topics: window!! as in, A - Z, A - Z, A - Z, etc. One file in particulary is actually repeated more.

I've done this before with other projects and had no trouble. In fact, I checked all of the settings on the projects that work against this one and can find nothing different. Why is the set of help files repeating? I really can't release this until it's fixed. All content appears to be present, I get no errors, nothing in the build process (of the master project) indicated I did something wrong. I should mention that I'm storing all projects in Visual Source Safe, and check them out as needed, but this is not a new process to me.

Vista and WinHelp

I find it fascinating that Microsoft distributes winhelp.exe (16-bit
WinHelp) as part of Vista but stubbornly refuses to distribute winhlp32.exe
(32-bit WinHelp). Apparently Microsoft still needs/wants to use WinHelp
popups so they're keeping the 16-bit WinHelp executable as part of Vista.

So now here's my question... Robohelp has its own .dll (RoboEx32.dll) that
it allows us to distribute. My understanding is that this is what allows us
to have the tripane view. Having been mostly away from help development for
the last several years but about to enter the fray again, what happens if I
develop a RoboHelp Help2000 project and load project.hlp, project.cnt and
the RoboHelp .dll file onto a Vista machine (which only has winhelp.exe)??
Does this work?

WinHelp to HTML Help

Another WinHelp/Vista-related query...

We have a PC-based application (as opposed to server-based) that uses WinHelp and What's This help. With Vista coming, it looks like our best bet is to convert to HTML help (chm). If we can simply designate an HTML output for the main help, then that should be relatively straighforward to deal with. What concerns me, though, is the What's This help mapping. I'm having trouble visualizing how to manage that part of the conversion. Does anyone have suggestions or experience with this?

Testing Context Senitive Links

Bug Hunter and CHS test are neat littel tools. But it is a bit tedious going through every link to ensure they are all there. Is there a tool available to automate the CHS-Test process?
For example:
1 Select the WinHelp file.
2 Select the header file containing mappings.
- Tool searches all links automatically.
- Tool displays report of all links highlighting errors.
3 Author corrects erros and goes home early to his kids.

Topic reference number in error Wizard

When generating in WinHelp, the Error Wizard displays messages such as -

The nature of the problem and its location are usually fairly obvious, so no problem there. But - where is that does that Topic reference number (e.g. Topic #123) come from and where is it shown/used apart from here? It's not user-allocated, it's not shown in the Topic Properties dialog, it's not 'hidden' text and it does not always reflect the Topic's actual sequential position in the .DOC. So is it user-accessible? Am I missing something obvious?

This an oddity that I have noted for years, through all my various combinations of OS/Word/RH (currently fully-updated XP/2003/X5.02). It's an irritation rather than a problem, of course. Has someone an answer, please?!

WinHelp 2000 type change when compiling

Edit: Disregard this note. I found the Wrong Font thread on the RoboHelp for Word forum that deals with this.

Compiling a WinHelp 2000 help seems to change the styles of one .doc file from Arial to Times Roman. At least that is what shows in the .hlp file. Styles seem OK in the topics and .doc file. No changes made to topics in the file.

When I compiled in MS HTML, out of curiousity, the topic type came out OK but in front of the first topic of the problem file was a list of font names, mostly for foreign fonts. For example: Arial;Courier New;Symbol;Helvetica;Wingdings;Times New Roman CE;Times New Roman Cyr;Times New Roman Greek;Times New Roman Tur;Times New Roman (Hebrew);Times New Roman (Arabic);Times New Roman Baltic;Times New Roman (Vietnamese);...

As changes are made in various topics in other files, in WinHelp 2000, the typeface in those files also changes from Arial to Times after compiling.

We are using RH X5, on XP sp2. These files have not been touched since April 2005, at which time things seemed OK. I have a feeling that WinHelp 2000 is not getting along with XP sp2.

Can anyone provide insights?

Can I ask what the differences are between WinHelp 2000 and WinHelp 4? Both are designed for using RTF for Win 32 and their overviews appear very similar - except that WinHelp 2000 output consists of 3 files (an additional .dll)

I am developing using RoboHelp5.02, Word 2003, PC, WinXP - producing in house for similar.

Greetings everyone~
I have gotten familar with webhelp however i have to update some old program help files and we are using delphi and I need to compile with the .pas file. I was able to successfully compile but it seems everytime I restart the program all the topic id changes I made revert back to the original. Anyone have any advice on why this happens to me? Been working on the same help since Tuesday (last week)

Win Help 2000 Error

I have shipped a help file that is deployed via our corporate network. While the file works file at my personal workstation, the distributed version's index is failing when users try to display topics with the following pop-up error:

Win Help 2000/An attempt was made to access an unnamed file past its end

Display of topics using either TOC or Search works fine.

Everything runs fine from my workstation (TOC, index and search) and I also placed the shipment on our network on another server and ran it successfully. It would seem that there is something missing on the destination server, but I ran the ship list and I had included everything listed... contents, help files, GID, dll, etc...

I am wondering if there might be another DLL missing that the ship list is not picking up on.

Any help in this regard would be great.

Search Results Do Not Link to their Topics

I created a WebHelp system with a standard search function. When published, the search worked on my local drive:

1. Enter a search criteria in the search field on the tool bar.
2. Click the Search button
==> Results display in the navigation window.
3. Click a result term.

This functioned correctly when the system is published on my local drive. On the network drive, these links are not dead. The pointer changes to a hand, etc, but no topic displays when we click the links.

When we click a search results link, the content window goes blank. No content displays. We are in testing, and my testers tell me they get a "Page Not Found" error. When I try this on the network drive, the window goes blank. I notice that the target path display at the bottom of the IE window is truncated:

file///[drive letter]:/[folder]

The drive letter reference is the mapping on my computer. The path is several folders short of the actual destination. That seems wrong, but I don't know what to do to correct it. The Destination Protocol on the WebHelp Publish dialog is set to File System, and the path references the mapping on my computer, as I selected the path via a browse. Does this need to be the name of the network drive? Should I select a
