PDF Printing Error: "invalidfont", "Offending Command: xshow"

i saw similar discussions that were not exactly what I was looking for, so I decided to post my own:

I have a critically important document that I've created that is refusing to print correctly due to the errors in my thread title here. After a lot of trial and error (different machines, different OS's, etc.) we've determined that it is a problem with the font inclusion, however, the "offending" font(s) - it's an OpenType Google Font Family - is one that I've used in dozens of other PDF's, in all sorts of combinations and variants, and have never had an issue before this document. This is coming at a critically inconvenient time, given the nature of the project and given that the aforementioned font (Roboto), is part of our brand identity.

I have made a PDF with the type converted to outlines, but that balloons the file size up to around 11MB (from 278KB). I dont mind the conversion, but if there were a way to do this and reduce the size to something more manageable, I'd be thrilled (ideally <5 MB).

The document is ALL (relatively simple) vector imagery and fonts, and I've not yet experimented with the resolution slider in the text outlining portion of the PDF dialogue (have no idea how relevant this would be in a vector document, given that it's not RASTERIZING the outlined type).

My organization publishes our magazine in electronic form as a PDF. Our designer uses InDesign to layout everything and then exports it as a PDF. We have encouraged our authors to use Flash files within their articles to help demonstrate scientific concepts. The first author to do it gave us (3) files. When I have received the PDF for review, those (3) files show up in the layout as a generic black and white symbol and just underneath the Acrobat toolbar I get a message stating: "Some features have been disabled to avoid potential security risks. Only enable this feature if you trust this document."

I know many of my readers will miss this announcement and won't know what to do with the (3) Flash files. Is there any way to export out of InDesign to PDF and automatically enable the Flash files so they show up and play?

Disappearing elements in a pdf when flattening

I suspect that this has been discussed before, but we put together a publication, and receive PDF ads from many sources, so I don't know how they are built. Sometimes, if we either flatten the PDF, or open it in Photoshop, elements will disappear. Sometimes just a portion of a logo will disappear, and if we don't notice it, the publication ends up having to refund the client. Any ideas what's causing this and how to avoid it?

I have been trying for some time to get through to someone at Adobe to explain my predicament. Momentarily working from France I was compelled to pay French VAT for the annual subscription. Somehow I managed to get the programme license, but the annual subscription has been debited twice. What makes it even worse is the fact that the programme isn't able to decipher German Umlauts and the "ß", so the programme is pretty useless.

What can I do to get through to Adobe and ask them to at least countermand my duplicated subscription?

I am trying to open a document on my Macbook Pro with Adobe Acrobat Pro from my teacher and it is a PDF file with videos within it. The videos are not loading and I do not know why! Hi.

My company receives a lot of PDF documents that we hand enter because they don't come in via EDI.

I'm wondering if anyone has found a good way to convert PDF documents such as Invoices and Purchase Orders into useable EDI (ie XML,X12 ec). Please don't respond saying use one of the free converters, I've tried them and they are not even close to what I need. Also the Save as XML options don't do any good either.

I'm looking for an "intelligent" converter that knows where data is and can create a properly formatted XML for import into our ERP system. I know that may be asking a lot but I thought I would see if anyone had any useful advice or knew of some software/services out there for this.

Prepopulate PDF with data from database

Hi,

I have a requirement to prepopulate the PDF with data from database (ex: Invoice Number, Amunt and 'Yes/No'). This then needs to be sent to users to mark the invoices that they have paid (by marking those invoices as Yes).

My question is, is it possible to pre-pupulate the PDF with invoice data that I have before sending to my supplier? also can I dynamically generate one PDF per supplier. Again the list of supplier comes from my database.

Please advise if 'PDF Workflow' is the right product to satisfy the above said requirement.

Is it possible for illustrator (cs5 or later) to open/maintain original PDF layers?

I want to edit a map that I found on the USGS.gov website. From that site, I've downloaded a PDF file which is organized into a few layers. Of course when I open it, illustrator has all the content grouped together and on one layer.

I am a long time user, but some of the program details evade me. I just want to know once and for all... is this just impossible?, or is there a way to work around this?

*One other thing I've considered but haven't tried yet, is to export or re-save each layer as its own individual PDF. Then maybe I can open each one in illustrator and reassemble the map from there.

Impact Font subset embedding issues

OK, I have a strange situation that I can't seem to figure out. I have a PDF that is being used for print and for web purposes. When the PDF gets created the Impact font subset is embedded properly (as you can see below).

Before uploading to the web, I reduce the file size by clicking on 'File -> Save As -> Reduce Size PDF'. After doing this, the font subset is no longer embedded as seen below...

This only happens with the Impact font and only if I reduce the file size on a PC. When I do the same thing on a MAC, the font subset stays embedded.

I've tried using Acrobat Pro versions 9.5.5 and 8.1.4 on the Macs and 10.1.10 and 9.5.2.295 on the PCs.

The font being used has these properties on a PC...

Any ideas?

Save Illustrator PDF for unknown usage

Does anyone have any thoughts/recommendations for how to best save an Illustrator file as a PDF when the end use of the PDF is unknown?

Here's the context:

I'm designing a logo in for a client who is not currently working with any specific printer and will simply be holding onto the artwork until he's ready to use it. Since this prevents me from creating a lot of files with end-use in mind, I'm trying to give him a variety of files for high-quality printing so that he's not limited by a single format further down the road. I've created AI files and EPS files for offset printing, and I would like to provide PDFs as well. However, I can't create a PDF to match the specifications of a specific printer (since there isn't one). Are there optimal settings for a PDF so that it can be modified to suit a variety of outputs at a later date?

Are there any other file formats you'd recommend in this situation?

I'm working in Illustrator CS4, in U.S Web Coated SWOP v.2, and I have access to Photoshop CS5 and Reader X. The Illustrator artwork contains only 3 colours (I have 2 versions- one in process colour and one in Pantone), and the colour areas are broad and flat. I have no transparency or gradients, and all fonts have been converted to outlines.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm an amateur trying to learn more about workflow/prepress, so I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Completely Embed Font (not Subset) in PDF several methods not working

Hi,

I have an Illustrator CS5 file, on a Windows 7 PC.

I have used "Save As" direclty from Illustrator, also "Print" with Distiller and finally the Acrobat Pro 9 "Preflight" "Fixups" to Embed Fonts.

This has included setting subsetting to 0% and in the "Print" dialogue when using the Distiller method, changing the font dropdown to "Complete".

I do not want to convert my font to outlines, because of the changes this causes. I do not want to subset - but completely embed the fonts.

This is driving me insane, and I really would appreicate any suggesstions. Please help!

Acrobat Distiller Watched Folder problem with OSX 10.9

Probably not Adobe's problem but anyone else getting this?

Just upgraded to Mavericks and now when I try to print to a watched folder from Quark it keeps wanting to save the postscript file onto the desktop rather than directly into the "In" folder of the Distiller watched folder. Got so used to just hitting command/alt/p and then return.

Have recreated the watched folder just in case.

Quark 8 (ok not officially supported for OSX 10.9) but this seems more of a directory issue.

Preference is set to create postscript for later distilling and use watched folder.

Acrobat/Distiller X 10.1.8.

Am going to post this on Quark and Apple sites.

Somebody's costing me an extra few keystrokes per job printed !!!

How do you reorder the pages in a PDF ie back to front (not individually via Page view). The manual solution of course is to scan or import them in the correct order in the first place. However, this did not happen, and we have many PDF's which are 100% in the wrong order. So we would like to press a button and have them in the right order.

We need to translate documents, generally from Frenchy to English and have tried converting the French document to a Word Document but this does not work. Have you considered a program that would allow for these conversionts just a Google Translate will do. But I can't copy and paste a Pdf document to Google Translate.

I'm trying to figure out how to take a couple of hundred PDFs, Crop them to trim, then convert them all to JPGs using any of the adobe programs.

In bridge I was able to Batch convert all the PDFs to JPGs but it wouldn't crop them to the trim also...

I thought I could use the Photoshop Image Processor to batch action crop and save them again but I always get one of two errors... "There were no source files that could be opened by Photoshop." or "Please Specify a destination folder."

I don't know why this is coming up since I have it selecting the folders with the JPGs that I converted in Bridge and saving to another folder..

Does anyone know if I can do all of this at once? Or how I can somehow get this to work so that II don't have to open,crop and save for each individual file?

Trouble creating grayscale PDF

Hi!

I have a bunch of grayscale PDS-files, dot grain 20%, that I need to make into a grayscale PDF. This has proven more difficult than I expected. I did a PDF from Bridge with "Output"-"preserve embedded color profile" checked, but it seems that didn't do much. The printing place said it reads like a colour PDF.

Then I tried Acrobat Pro, first to make a new PDF file from my images, and then to convert my earlier Bridge-PDF using "Preflight" - "convert colour to grayscale". That made the images low resolution and dark. The file size went down from Bridge's 140 MB to 45 MB.

Finally I gave InDesign a shot, but I lack the skills to do much with it.. If I put some effort into learning InDesign, will I be able to export one single PDF-file, with the original (or close to it) resolution and tone values, and with a grayscale colour profile?

I need to create a pdf sewing pattern and tutorial. I have created the actual print out pattern in Illustrator with the exact dimensions. Is InDesign the best program to write the tutorial (instructions) part, as it contains lots of images. Converting VSD to Dynamic PDF

It takes hours upon hours upon hours to manually convert a logical Vizio diagram to a flowing PDF. I have litterally spent more than 300 hours on a document and I'm only half done.

Does anyone know of an app that can do this for me? There has got to be something out there!

How do I control paper trays with a PDF

Right now we have to use postscript to specify which page in a document gets pulled from which paper tray on our docutech/IGEN etc. We are able to specify the paper source through InDesign and a third party application but in order for the press to understand the command, we must submit the job as postscript rather than a PDF.

How does one do this with a "modern" PDF workflow, embedding this information in the PDF itself via some means or is there some sort of external control I am missing? Does PDF/VT support this?

Encryption through watermarking

Hi, we are in the process of standardizing legal contracts across the firm. The workflow we'd like to implement is for all documents to be watermarked. A legal document, if edited, will not print with the watermark and hence the authorized signatory will know not to sign that. How can we achieve this?

Automate PDF Creation from Multiple Data Sources

I'm not very familar with the advanced features of Acrobat or other Adobe publishing solutions, so I apologize for the broad question.

We currently have data in a SQL database that we would like to extract and assemble into a single PDF document, along with supporting documents that are in a file share. Prior to each record being extracted, we'd like a summary page which is pulled from another data source, an excel file. This is part of a review process. We want to make sure the review process is mobile friendly.

We are currently trying something that creates a nice Word docment that contains hyperlinks to the content on file shares. It is functional, but mobile devices require a VPN connection back to the environment to access the linked content. If we could assemble all the documents into a single PDF with a linked Table of Contents, that would make it easier.

I'm not sure if I should be looking at Acrobat with javascripts, or LiveCycle, or something entirely different. Any direction you can provide would be appreciated.

I have a pdf file and I want to modify it with adobe 8 professional but when I m going to delete some text the said that all or part of selection has no available system font.

When I m choosing other fonts and clivk on embed Im taking a message that says The change to a different fontwas not done because the chosen font and the font encoding in this document differ and could not be resolved

Any solution on that?

in my php app, i fill pdf forms with xfdf data. It works fine.

Now i will fill a multiline form with include a line break. My instructions come from:

There is a Tag <value-richtext> rather then <value> and in this Tag are Tags similar to HTML, no rich text.

All i try: \n \r \n\r <br/>

...dont work.

I am very new to the design world. I have a printing business and received and image to be printed in Adobe Acrobat (I think). I needed to resize the image to be printed and took it into Photoshop CS6 where I cropped the edges. I then resave it as a PDF and took into a printer software, Fiery. Fiery has an Impose function where you can repeat an image to layout it on the correct paper size. It essentially just copies the original image several times depending on the layout. This particular image I repeated to 3 up and 1 across. When printed it came out with a magenta streak through the center image only. I have had the machine checked and they are adamant it's not a printer issue but a software issue. That once I altered the original image by resizing it that I altered the image and that I can't expect it to come out as seen on the screen. I've printed it all sorts of different ways and it only occurs with the 3 up 1 across image. I know that images can be changed when saved from program to program but this situation does not make sense that it is only the one area and layout that this shows up. I would appreciate any help, input, answers that anyone has. Again, I'm new to this and would like to understand if this is a potential for further printing jobs so that I can do what I need to avoid this situation.

Creating PDF from XML directly in a content management system?

Hi!

This is my first post here and I've tried to find any previous posts that could answer my question but to no avail. Also I think and hope this is the correct sub forum to post it in.

I work at a company that produces a product catalogue that is published as a webpage, a PDF document (used as the basis for a tablet app) and a printed catalogue from a PDF. For the PDF (used in the tablet app and the printed catalogue) we are using a CMS based on XML that produces Adobe FrameMaker documents which we then export the PDF from. We are looking in to updating the system and make it flow much better but are a bit uncertain of what the best way to go would be.

A solution I'm thinking of would be to have the content of the product catalogue in some kind of XML based service that can export the information in XML. This would hopefully make it possible to send the documents either directly to PDF by XML and some style sheets or import the XML into some InDesign templates (for the more complicated designs at intro pages etc).

One important aspect of the product catalogue is that we have all information saved in different languages so there has to be some kind of connection between the templates and different language versions -- ie. the page design but different language text flows for each language edition.

What I wonder is. What kind of services/solutions would there be that handles XML to PDF for a quite complicated product catalogue (ie. the different language versions)?

What is the best process to batch convert RTF files to Press quality PDF files?

We have an older application used in an area that only outputs RTF formatted letters.

They would like to send the letters to me to be merged together into single file for HighSpeed print on a monochorme press.

The software I use cannot accept RTF files, but can take in PDF files. We require that the PDF are press quality with no compression and at least 300dpi resolution.

They had attempted to use the work api to convert from RTF to PDF, however, they are not press quality and our process, in scaling them up, cannot keep up with the press.

So my question is what is the best process to batch convert RTF files to Press Quality PDF files? We want to be able to customize the output settings to meet our needs when doing so.

This will run on a workstation using Win XP with the only Adobe products installed being Acrobat pro X , Acrobat distiller X and the pdfmaker plugin for Office 2010.

any suggestions would be very helpful.

Distiller problem

I'm running Distiller X (10.0.0) on OSX Server. I have 2 watched folders, one that produces Hires PDF's and one for Low Res PDF's. 2 or 3 times a day a PS file fails to distil. It seems to get stuck in a loop as the progress bar keeps going accross but I get an end of file error. If I quit distiller and relaunch it the file then distills perfectly without having to re-save it or copy it over again, it just starts up and works so there cannot be anything wrong with the PS file. It's not the same file each time, it seems to be at random. The PS files are created directly from Quark Xpress (various versions) and contain various fonts, images, eps's and can range from a single page to 48 pages+. The PS file can be from anyone on our network so its not any one paticular user, file, font, image, size or anything! just totally ramdom. Is makes no difference if we save the PS file directly into the watched folder from Quark or save them to the desktop them copy them to the watched folder. The wached folders sit on or server (Mac OSX 10.6) and are accessed via gigabit ethernet.

Anyone got any ideas as to why this is happening?

PDF printing problem

We have run into a problem with our printing workflow. What happens is on random InDesign files created by our designer. When I do the layout for printing and export to PDF, the prints have pieces of the image cut off. The PDF's look perfect on screen, and it doesn't matter if we use Acrobat PRO 9.4 or Apple Preview to open the PDF to print. I tried printing directly from InDesign, and they printed fine. The designer is running CS3 on a Mac, OSX 10.6.8. My machine is running CS5, same OS. Because the jobs print fine from InDesign rules out a print driver issue, I think.

How does one search the Model Tree?

I would like to be able to search for a specific componet of a 3D model using simple functionality. Ctrl + F does not look through the Model Tree.

I was unable to find but 4 posts regarding this functionality and none provided a solid answer as to if this is feasible or not.

If it is not innate to either Reader/Acrobat, is it viable using JavaScript?

I have made an error and supplied cmyk files to a client when they require rgb. Is there a simple quick way to take the exisiting pdfs and change them to rgb without reopening each indesign doc and reexporting. The are a number of documents this applies to.

I've created a file in inDesign, exported it using High Quality print (PDF presets) and my Canon ImagePRESS (dropped the .pdf in Creo) is taking forever and a day to print. Should I use the Press Quality option? There are a lot of images and transparency is used a lot as well. But, its never taken this long... I'm printing a book of about 8 pages, it may take 5-7 minutes per book. Should I select another .pdf preset to print my job faster?

Please help!

cshow problems in Distiller 9.1

I'm having these nasty PostScript-problem which I can't seem to find a solution for. Out of all the files for three major newspaper being distilled every day I get the following postscript-error on 1-3 files every day:

If I send the same PS-files to the RIP they will RIP with no problem. If I open the same PS-files in Apple Preview they open fine with all fonts embedded as subset.

I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with fonts, but can anybody point me in the right direction?

Actually I have 8 files that all fail on a Windows 2008 Server running Distiller 9.1. I I run the same files through Distiller 9.1 on another computer running Distiller 9.1 under Windows XP (using the same settings), 5 out of these 8 files are OK. Same thing happens if I run the files through Distiller 9.1 on Mac OS 10.5.6

Can you record the audio from a Video embedded in a pdf?

I can't seem to find anything on this, so I will ask. A client sent us a company produced interactive pdf and wants us to use the audio from a video clip that is in the pdf. We asked for the audio clip but they don't know who to get it from and just keep saying it is in the pdf. While others try to explain that a pdf and an mp3 are not the same thing. I get to look into a fall back position of trying to extract the audio (or video). There is no copyright issue here. Client peon just can't/won't get the proper file.

Maybe some one can help or point me to info that says it is not possible.

I am trying to find a solution for exporting a PDF from any of the CS5 suite of products that would allow the designer to export the PDF with commenting enabled rather than having to take the extra step or opening the PDF in Acrobat X and saving with commenting enabled. Our account executives and client have only Reader and currently use the sticky note feature to review and comment on layouts. But viewing and printing these comments can be cumbersome. It's much easier for them when they are able to use the drawing tools which print on the document itself. I've checked in the presets for exporting to PDF but haven't found it to enable this feature. Please let me know if anyone has a solution or automated way of achieving this.

I need to convert a pdf multipage printout of a Powerpoint presentation to a single slide per page pdf document or Powerpoint presentation. This would be like reversing the actions of a pdf printer program. Is this possible. All of the pdf to Powerpoint converter programs I have tried or own only maintain the multipage layout and will not unstack the multipage printout format.

Our company is working on an online print editor. The customer will import his image and add text over that image.

The issue we are having is that when we edit the text in our online editor and convert it to PDF the text size is slightly different.

So in essence a line of 12pt text placed over an image in our editor is not showing up in the exact same spot in our PDF output file.

Does anyone know a product or solution that can solve this problem?

Need help with

converting a color PDF to single B&W group 4 tiff.

Note that some PDF images are crystal clear, but there are some

that have a screenshot pasted onto a blank page and these convert

I can't figure out why colors are fading when exporting to PDF. I've had this issue for a long time and am finally fed up with it enough to post. I'm in the RGB space in Illustrator (and transparency blend in InDesign). I'm using CS2 and Acrobat Pro 7 on Windows XP.

I have a PDF document that was created using Adobe InDesign CS5 Version 7.0, it is NOT encrypted, I have FULL permissions over it.

I downloaded the "free 30 day trial " of the exact same program that was used to make the pdf (adobe indesign cs5 version 7.0) and it WILL NOT open the pdf document!!! ;-(

I get a message saying, "adobe indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or file may be open in another application"... it's definitely not open in another application. Tried that already.

All i want to do is remove the watermark in the document!!! That's it.. Can someone please help me?? Thanks so much in advance!

Mysterious lines in PDF

So any help would be useful.

At our shop we use CS3. Usually when creating our artwork for print we use this work flow:

1. Flatten transparency
2. Save as .EPS
3. Distillation (PDF/X-1a;2001)

This creates small, strange, artifact looking lines throughout the document. These do not print and if you zoom in on them in acrobat they disappear which would lead one to assume that they do no exist. Recently we had a printer claiming that they printed out and I need to find a way to circumvent these 'mysterious lines'. They also cause a lot of problems with clients.

So any help, info, input would be helpful because i cannot find any record of this particular thing occurring.

How to merge colour-separated PostScript into full-colour PDF?

Hi there

I have a PostScript file that consists of four pages, one for each of the CMYK colour separations. I’d like to merge these pages into a single full-colour page. Any ideas on how to do this?

Creating a new PDF in Acrobat or with Distiller creates the four-page PDF. I’m sure I could figure out how to do it with PhotoShop, but I don’t want to rasterise it and I’d like to work out how to do it efficiently, as I’ll need to do this to a whole lot of other files as well.

I’d appreciate any advice or pointers to other resources. I’ve haven’t found much at all in my searching.

Creating an image field in acrobat pro

Using Acrobat Pro 9 I'm trying to create a field that when clicked an image can be selected from the computer and dropped into the box. I've found lots of info about inserting images into pdfs, but can't find a way to do this to make it possible as part of a form filling process - I think it can be done wih a button but I haven't had much sucess.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Question on PDF files with linked images (not embedded) between Reader and Illustrator

I run into situations when I get customer PDFs that need to be edited. When they load in Acrobat Reader it works fine. However if I load it into Illustrator it asks me to point it to the linked file. The question is how does Acrobat Reader open a PDF file and show a linked file when it is not embedded? Why can't Illustrator do the same thing?

Tiling PDFs Help Please

I'm using Adobe Illustrator 10 (OLD, I know). I have been asked by another clothing designer to take their hand-drawn pattern pieces and re-draft them as pdfs so they can sell them to a wider market. Some of these pattern pieces will be larger than 8.5 x 11 and will need to be printed out and then taped together by the consumer. I cannot for the life of me remember how to tile them so that each section will print on a standard letter sheet to be saved in pdf format. Can someone please help? Thanks so much!!
