Sharing a font with a third-party designer

I work with a magazine (as an employee), and we're considering hiring a third-party designer as an independent contractor to assist with some aspects of the layout. We're going to give him a trial run for one issue to see how things go. Unfortunately, he doesn't own the font we use for our headlines, subheads, etc. I'm wondering if there's any problem sharing my copy with him, at least for the trial period. My license agreement allows me to install the font on up to five computers, but I'm not sure if that would extend to an out-of-house, third-party designer (I suspect it doesn't). But I hate to spend $250 for all the different weights of the font if we end up not working with the designer long term.

Any thoughts?

Muse/Typekit web font list/preview?

Is there a specific foundry within Typekit that Muse uses to populate its list of available web fonts in the "Add Web Fonts..." menu? When I browse Typekit's site to find fonts for use in Muse the majority aren't available from within Muse. Likewise, some of the fonts available in the Muse menu are no where to be found on the Typekit site, Aguafina Script for example.

There's actually an Adobe foundry within Typekit, which contains LOTS of fonts unavailable in Muse. What kind of sense does that make?

It's difficult to use them in conjunction to facilitate type design. If I browse Typekit chances are the font isn't available in Muse anyways. If I browse Muse I frequently can't find the font on the Typekit site so I can preview at different sizes/weights to make a good decision regarding appearance and legibility for my viewers.

Any suggestions?

BTW, why the heck don't all the browsers use Muse's Design Mode type rendering engine? Typekit fonts are stunning when viewed in Muse's Design Mode but look like terrible every where else... even in Muse's own Preview Mode. The only exception I can find is on an iPhone which alse renders type beautifully.

I wanted to hand some work to one of my freelancers but he's not a CC member, so he can't access one of the fonts we're using in this project.

Is there a way I can share a font with him without having to buy it?

The font family is Museo Slab. I have access to it myself using my CC subscription & typekit, but this doesn't give me a local copy of the font on my machine.

I would be grateful if someone could shed some light on this – I am aware that licensing may be the issue here. Am I able to give me designer access to my CC subscription maybe, and if so what implications might this have?

Licensing rules for Rosewood STD font?

So Rosewood STD came with my new macbook and I absolutely love it. What are the rules for using it on:

1) Websites (just a banner image)

2) Merchandise

3) Part of a logo

4) Video Title

I've been searching everywhere for rules but nothing is really clear. Am I supposed to buy a license or is it a free font since it's by Adobe and came with this macbook?

I need to start designing soon, so it would be great if someone could get back to me ASAP. Thanks!

Differences between /FontFile2 and /FontFile3, or OS X Preview?

(This is my first post in these forums, so apologies if this topic is not appropriate.)

I've written a pile of Java utility code to generate PDFs with subsetted TrueType fonts using a CID-keyed font. (I know: there are multiple frameworks that do this type of thing. But I'm a hobbyist tinkerer who enjoys building things, and I'm enjoying learning how these technology stacks hang together.)

My code creates a font descriptor with a /FontFile2 reference to my TrueType font program output stream. The subsetted font always has the .notdef glyph at glyphIndex 0, with subsetted glyphs thereafter as they are first referenced. I'm using an identity mapping of CID==GlyphID. (I've been reading the various specs... the ISO PDF 1.7 reference, TrueType and OpenType specs at Microsoft and Apple, and several Adobe Tech Notes on various font and CMap technologies.)

All this seems to work.

However I'd like to also explore OpenType fonts with glyphs in a 'CFF ' table (CIDFontType0 instead of my CIDFontType2), and in preparation I'm trying to adapt my current TrueType-based code to OpenType using a /FontFile3 reference.

That's where the wheels fall off the train. Since I'm still dealing with 'glyf'-based fonts, I expected minimal changes, e.g., switching the font file dictionary key and putting the /Subtype -> /OpenType wrapper on the font stream itself.

Adobe Acrobat renders the resulting PDF just fine, and preflighting didn't bring up any errors (though possibly I'm not using Acrobat right). However OS X Preview under Mavericks scrambles my glyph mapping in a way that I can't mentally reverse engineer. I've tried tweaking things, but I'm stuck.

So my questions are: if your font subset is a TrueType-based CID font with 'glyf' outlines using /FontFile2, what changes are necessary to make an equivalent OpenType font using /FontFile3? and/or Does Mavericks Preview support PDFs with /FontFile3 and 'glyf'-based OpenType fonts? I think the odds are with me misunderstanding aspects of the specifications, and it's also possible that my /FontFile2 code is also broken in a way that (un)fortunately is forgiven by both Acrobat and Preview.

(I have two "equivalent" PDF examples of what my code generates that I can try to attach if this topic gets any traction.)

I looked in the usual places, fonts.com, myfonts.com, but they are not available. Of course, they are Japanese fonts, so they are hard to find for us western people

Web fonts render on different browsers. Is there any solution?

I'm having a problem with font render in Chrome and Firefox. Strange as it sounds but it would seem only internet explorer will render fonts nicely. Any solution for this, besides changing it to png files?

I have this dilemma:

I'm about to re-design the corporate website, the corporate typeface that's been used as display typeface for print material and offline media for years is a custom product made back in the day. When I try to use that typeface as a webfont it looks "cracked" and jagged at certain sizes and alright at some resolutions. In other words not optimal. Since the administration at work is keen on stretching the visual guidelines from print to web I contacted the external type designer that said he could try to redraw it to make it look better at pixel sizes for web. When I browse rather large company websites out there I see that many of them don't use their classic corporate print typeface online but have chosen to use readymade webfonts from Google, FontSquirrel or similar, and they use some classic reliable screenfont as their bodytext typeface, like arial, open sans, verdana etc.

So what do? Is it becoming more common these days to actually use the good old corporate typeface also on web in terms of display fonts? Could the old trusted "print typeface" be redrawn to suit the needs and work from H1 to H8 for instance? Just to be clear, I'm talking about headlines / display typeface and not the body text in this case. I'm pretty sure I'm able to convince the CEO over here that using our printbased body type as a bodytxt online is a rather messy affair.

Appreciate any input on this!

Licensing font in iPhone App?

Hello,

as you can read in the title I am currently developing an iPhone App. I purchased the Adobe CS5 Design Premium and already used it to create graphics.

My question is if I can use Myriad Pro in my App and if I need to purchase a new license.

The font will be encrypted in the iPhone App-file later and cannot be extracted. So it would fit "printable" and according to the font licensing-tables Myriad Pro is "editable".

But I am unsure so I wanted to ask here first.

Typekit desktop fonts are synced but the fonts are not working

I'm new to Adobe Creative Cloud services and immediate have noticed that Typekit is hit or miss. I have no trouble syncing the fonts on Typekit.com, they show as synced in my CC control panel. Photoshop CC sometimes even recognize the missing fonts as typekit fonts on a PSD load and ask if I want to update the missing fonts with the Typekit fonts, I confirm I do or in general try to use the synced fonts, and it doesn't work – fonts are missing. I restart Photoshop, I restart my computer, I attempt the same thing over and over again. Sometimes it eventually works, but today its not. This is all very frustrating since access to Typekit was one of the main reasons I decided to go on the Adobe Creative Cloud. Please help!

[Guide] How to identify a font

Hello world. Have you ever seen a great font that it's already rendered and it's name is nowhere around? Have you spend a thousand of hours looking for that holy font that finally complete the design you've been working on for months? Have you roll on the floor while crying for hours when you give up to find it?... Well, no more my friends.

Here's a little guide I made and that you can use to always find all the fonts you want to.

1_ To begin, you have to find an image of the font that you want to identify. If the font is selectable text on somewhere, you must move it to an image (taking a screenshot and cutting the text area will work).

At this point you may want to have some considerations:

Try to get the text as horizontal as possible.
Letters should be around 100 pixels tall in your image. Less could not work.
Make sure letters aren't touching each other. Use the zoom tool and edit your images as accurately as you can and, if possible, space the characters apart more than normal.
Use as many characters as possible, and use characters that looks unique to that font (diacritics will work greatly).
Save it with the best quality (300 DPI, TIFF format, grayscale).

2_ Now, we have to upload our image to the search engine. WhatTheFont by MyFonts is a great choise, but WhatFontis it's fine too. Both works really good, the mainly differences are that the first one is more accurate, while the second one will show a much bigger number of alternative results.

I recommend using both simultaneously and compare results.

3_ Once the file is uploaded, we only have to look among the results 'till we find the correct font.

And that will be all, it's that easy. Once you found your font you can keep looking for similar ones with tools such as Identifont and increase your knowledge. The sky's the limit!

Things to consider

Always remember that this is not magic, so don't expect to always get a result 100% accurate. As long as you keep using images with good resolution and a decent size, you will have more probabilities of nail the exact font.

Also, at some point you'll (probably) find yourself trying to identify an exclusive non-commercial font. In these cases, we must settle for the most similar one (or contact the designer and try to reach an agreement to use his/her creation on our works).

I've happily used ATM Deluxe 4.1 (build 243) with Windows XP SP3 for many years and am about to upgrade to Windows 7.

Has anyone successfully (re)installed ATM under W7? (32 or 64 bit) I'd like to continue using ATM, rather than going to a 3rd party font manager & recreated my various font sets.

I want to set Warnock Pro Light as my default font (in Word and InDesign). However, when I use it and hit the keyboard command for Bold, it doesn't change to the semibold weight as I would expect--and as other fonts I have do. Is it legal to use them (after converted into outlines) for creating stock vectors and then selling them on stockphotos/designs web pages? Identify Alphabet (not particular font)

We are recreating an old package. As shown below, the printed message (whatever it says) appears twice, and the glyphs (mostly) match, so I doubt the red-circled ones are merely distortions or misprints (see explanation below -- I could be wrong).

My first thought was that it was Cyrillic. But there are two glyphs (circled in red) that do not appear in any Cyrillic, or Open Type font glyph sets that I can find. There is another (?) glyph (circled in green) where I am not sure if it is a separate glyph, or a print blob and a glyph.

I have had no luck at the usual suspects; whatthefont forum, etc.

If anyone can point me to a language / alphabet, or a font contining the glyphs I would be very appreciative.

Can I automate specialized, detailed, rater-like fonts in PS and ID?

I'm trying to create a mailer for a group with about a thousand members, and the client wants to have each image personalized with the member's name such as you may have seen on those "my name in the picture" calendars. Here's an example for clarification:

The graphic design is no problem, but I'm certainly not getting paid enough to manually arrange every name on the list. I'm sure these companies have some way of automating the process. They must create the "font" then be able to auto-fill the right name/messages, but I can't figure out that workflow in my head. If the names were written in simpler fonts this would be a cake walk, but some of these fonts look more complicated than I know how to easily automate (in the example above, the blocks-of-snow and hay bale fonts, and I think there are environmental lighting and shadow effects on the lilypad and apple fonts).

Creating each of these images alone is well within my ability, but I've never really worked with font creation and, as I said, the automation in this project is throwing me for a loop. Can anyone help me figure this process out? Can I do it with just Photoshop and InDesign?

restricted font - unable to save basic pdf - help please

Pixelating in Illustrator

I was writing some text in Illustrator with a stroke on it, no matter what I do whenever I add the stroke it makes a litte white outline visible in between the fill and the stroke. I am screen printing this text.

1) Will the white pixely outline show up when its printed.

2) How can I fix this?

Assignment: Type out two fonts (A–Z, 0–9) and smash them together, splice their DNA. Take the spine from one, and mesh it with the stems or serifs of another. Create two sets of upper-case letters, and numbers 0-9.

I have googled, YouTubed, searched on Adobe. I'm having a problem figuring out how to "splice" the text and combine it. Any suggestions?

Fonts for T-shirt deisgn and Logos

Okay guys,

So I am in the process of designing a logo for my band. The logo will be used for T-shirts, our website, and other merch (stickers, business cards, etc.). I need some assistance as far as licencing rights go. I want to use the font Eccentric Std. for the logo and I was wondering if this font could be used for that purpose. I read that it fell under print and preview, but I wasn't sure if that meant that it could only be used on a website. Also, I saw that the font has been used on birthday cards like the Rose brand that Walmart carriess, so I'm assuming that there is some way that it should be okay,

Way back when, my company created a simple TTF font that consisted of the company logo, scaleable using font size. This was when PDFs and electronic delivery were less of a concern for us. The font logo now permeates a large number of company documents, which are frequently reused.

Years later, I'm back at the company, and we have a problem with the font getting embedded into PDFs. The font was created with Fontographer, and apparently the permission was set not to allow embedding, which is exactly the opposite of what is needed.

How does one change the permission for the existing (very narrowly used)? Shall we start from scratch with a new font? If the latter, how do we avoid this problem? Thanks.

Hi everyone,

Hope you don't mind me asking this question, and sorry if it's been asked before. I'm developing a site and since it has a dark background I decided to use Verdana as body text since it's clean and readable and has plenty of space. My question now is what font to use to go with for titles etc. I have to say that I'm going round in circles, as I've read lots of conflicting advice; some say to contrast with a different looking font and you shouldn't have two similar ones together, others say the opposite!

At the moment I'm considering Gill Sans Std Light, Lora, Georgia, Avenir Std Light, Sabon and Scala. Do you think these would be suitable, or should I be looking to use something else?

Can i lock a font into lower case?

I create a lot if Indesign templates for my clients. Many of them for design purposes use all lower case for some things.

i.e. A name would appear as JOHN smith

I am able to caps lock JOHN so that no matter what name I type in there from the template it stays all caps. But I cannot figure out a way to lock the last name so that no matter what I type it's always lower case. This is important so that if someone is covering for me they don't accidentally add a capitol letter to things that shouldn't have them.

Font licensing for eBooks (epub with @font-face)

Hello,

The ePub format supports - as you may know - the CSS2 @font-face, but Adobe's fonts aren't directly embeddable that rule.

At the moment, there are not FAQs or license terms specifically written for ePub (or other kind of ebook formats) so I'm going to refer to the currently available documents I found on the web.

A Typblography blog post (http://blogs.adobe.com/typblography/2010/10/web-font-licensing.html) clearly describes the difference Adobe sets between "embedding" and "serving" a font.

Epub format - unfortunately - lies in a sort of no man's land, because it is a zipped container of browsable documents (xhtml files, stylesheets, images, fonts), so it can be considered a self-contained and portable document, but at the same time, it doesn't protect the fonts from unauthorized use.

Also the Adobe Font Licensing FAQs (http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/antipiracy/ff_faq.html) partially clarify the field of discussion.

The Adobe's proprietary font obfuscation feature, supported by Adobe Digital Editions, can be easily overridden with few lines of python code.

Adobe doesn't allow for @font-face embedding but let authors access to use its fonts via specialized web font services such as Typekit.com which can't be used by ePubs because of its offline nature.

My questions are:

Can I use an Adobe licensed font (i.e. Minion Pro) in an ePub ebook using @font-face?
What kind of license or agreement should be used?
Is there a dedicated contact for licensing-related issues (the font-licensing@adobe.com address just bounces back)?

Indeed, I can already download some ePubs featuring the Minion Pro typeface. I.e: "Il fu Mattia Pascal" edited by Mondadori (the most important italian publishing company) and freely downloadable from the LaFeltrinelli store (http://www.lafeltrinelli.it/products/9788852013089/Il_fu_Mattia_Pascal/Luigi_Pirandello.ht ml).

That makes me confident that an arrangement is possible, isn't it?

Typekit font (Source Sans Pro) is not rendering correctly when publishing site from Muse. I know not to expect it to preview correctly (sigh) but it is not publishing. Ex: Source Sans Pro Light 16 point is publishing/displaying in web page as ITALIC, not regular. HELP!

This issue is cross-platform, PC and Mac.

Looks great in Design, Preview all messed up, but PUBLISH shows font as displayed in Preview, NOT as displayed in Design.

Vertical Spacing

Hello,

I'm new to graphic design. I'm trying to understand how best to vertically space my content. I have 4 numbers that are each 4" tall. How much space should i add between each number so that they look spaced properly. For instance, imagine I had:

How much space should be between the 1 and the 2? Or the 2 and the 3? Or the 3 and the 4?

I am in N. America trying to purchase a Hebrew font for use in creating some bilingual documentation for a product my company will sell. We are trying, if possible, to use a Hebrew typeface that would be considered "compatible" with Frutiger. Problem is, I am not finding any Hebrew fonts at all on Adobe's website as is presented to me in N. America. Does Adobe have any Hebrew fonts? How can I access and purchase them?

Problem with the Non-English Characters

Hello,

I have been using Adobe Illustrator but I have a huge problem with the non-english characters with Standart Fonts. With the Professional font's I have no problem with them. But when I'm using any standart font in font folio library I cannot type any "ğ-İ-ş". I can add those letters in fontlab with the glyphs (scedilla, idotaccent, gbreve). Most of the fonts have those letters already prepeared so I dont even have to redraw. But I can't add those glyph to every single font because I dont have that kind of time and patience. Is there any better solution for this? Or is there any font folio pack that all fonts are PRO.

Font licensing questions

I have been searching around and trying to confirm a few things that I *think* I know but it's all very confusing to me:

- My client wants to publish an ebook, which will actually just be a PDF displayed online (rather than a Kindle ebook, etc.). It would likely be downloaded by others, though, for a fee. They would get access to the PDF both online and offline (if they purchase it). We haven't chosen a font, but will probably go with a standard system font (minion, myriad, etc.). Assuming we go with an Adobe font, are we covered legally to use the typeface in this way?

- Am I correct in telling the client that if we use a system font (say, minion), and they have it on their computer as well, they may also use it for their further commercial purposes without worrying about getting a license? I understand that a license would come into play only if they did NOT have the font on their computer.

- What about for web use? if we wanted to use a standard font like minion for their website, would we need a separate license? I'm not a web designer -- I focus on static graphics -- but if they hire a web designer later, I want to make sure they can still follow their style guide, which by that point will be suggesting specific fonts to use.
