Update for XMP FileInfo SDK available

Dear customers,

with the 2014 release of the Creative Cloud applications there is also an update for the XMP FileInfo SDK available on the XMP Developer Center.

In Photoshop CC 2014, Illustrator CC 2014 and InDesign CC 2014 the Flash based FileInfo dialog has been replaced with a new implementation.

The new dialog continues to offer an extensibility mechanism to add custom metadata to your assets and related panels in the FileInfo dialog. The new mechanism is based on XML files instead of writing code in ActionScript. This is similar to the current “Generic” panels from the FileInfo SDK but with more functionality. The idea of this SDK is to provide a fast and simple way to extend CC applications to interact with custom metadata without the need to write and compile code. For those who need all the flexibility and functionality of the coding approach the recommendation is to use the new HTML5 based extension mechanism for CC applications. The XMP Developer Center site also provides an example that shows how to create an HTML5 extension that can manipulate XMP data.

For customers with existing FileInfo extensions, the new SDK contains a converter tool to automatically convert existing custom “Generic” panels to the new extension format. Unfortunately it is technically not possible to convert existing Flash based extensions.

We certainly appreciate all your feedback about the new version of the dialog and the SDK.

XMP metadata lost in PNG files

Hello,

My XMP metadata is lost from a PNG file if the file is modified and saved. Here is what I am doing

1. Put some metadata in a PNG file using m_xmpFile.OpenFile( FileName, kXMP_PNGFile , kXMPFiles_OpenForUpdate)

2. Edit this file in Photoshop (changed the brightness and contrast of the file)

3. Saved the the modified files.

All my XMP metadata is now lost fromt the file.

is my implementation wrong? Is there some other way to stamp metadata in PNG files?

maxLength="10" Character Count Limit in a Data Field

Hello,

Below is the syntax I'm using trying to get a data field ( MyField ) in my panel to have a maximum allowance of 10 characters.

This syntax is not doing anything to limit the count. Do you know what I have wrong in the line below?

XMP Data available only with Photoshop CS6

Hi,

We are using an image vault to manage our pictures and i made an InDesign JavaScript to retreive images description contained within the XMP datas.

The text entered in the image bank is good in the browser.

When i open the image in Photoshop CS6 (and older), the XMP data shown is good.

When i open the image in others application (Bridge, PSD CC or my InDesign Script), only the old data is showing (prior to the image bank text update).

To make the good XMP data available to all application, i must open the image in CS6, make a "save as" and then the good XMP is showing through all the application. With an image bank of over 30000 images, this is hardly a solution.

This is what the header looks like when exporting the XMP datas)

Differences in XMP modifications in various CS applications

Hi,

Trying to sort out an issue that has thus far escaped me. We maintain a digital asset management system that is set up to extract XMP metadata from image files. When metadata is written to custom XMP fields using Photoshop CS6, the metadata is extracted appropriately. When the same metadata fields are written to a file using Bridge CS6, the extraction fails. Though our custom XMP fields appear identical whether written in PS or Bridge and are able to be read across those two programs, when I examine the file headers w/ Exiftool there are some noticeable differences depending on the method used.

Essentially, writing metadata to our custom fields in Photoshop will trigger updates to these values whereas doing the same Bridge will not, and the difference is impacting our ability to have it flow through to our DAM:

IFD0 Software

IFD0 Modify Date

XMP Toolkit

XMP Modify Date

XMP Create Date

IPTC Coded Character Set

Any ideas as to why this is? Ideally, it would be nice to have the behavior be the same across the two. P

Possibly also coming into play here is that most of the files where metadata is being written are older TIFF files where the above fields don't exist at all.

We are trying to implement a process so that any document that needs to be printed through our Java application will be printed as PDF using Adobe Reader.

For which, We created and execute the below command line to call Adobe Reader and print the PDF on a printer.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32.exe" /T "\\<Application Server>\Report\<TEST.PDF>" "<Printer Name>".

Current Situation: The above command line parameter when executed is working as expected in a User's Workspace.

When executed in a command line on the Application Server, it is working as expected.

But, the same is not working while executing it from Deployed environment.

Software being used: 1. Adobe 11.0 enterprise version. 2. Webshpere Application Server 8.5.5.2.

Please let us know if there is a way to enable trace logs in Adobe Reader to further diagnose this issue.

XMPToolkitSDK64 build error Xcode 6

Hi,

I'm trying to build the the sdk with Xcode. I ran the shell script and selected option 4 to make a dynamic 64bit Xcode build. The shell was successful and I opened the XMPToolkitSDK64.xcodeproj. There was a warning to automatically update the project settings which I followed. Made sure the target was building for the latest sdk. I'm trying to run ALL_BUILD and it fails at ZERO_CHECK with 1 issue:

I then ran the other schemes and they worked. Only ZERO_CHECK has an error and won't build. Do I need it to get started or any idea how to fix this?

Better yet, if anyone can put up all the files, including Xcode samples project, already built that would be great. I'm getting stuck just trying to get the code I need to make what I need. It's really frustrating. I suppose maybe this whole thing is just over my head and fixing this is something simple but If I didn't need to read xmp to get marker data from mp3s I'd not be waisting my time right now.

Embedding data from xml file into metadata of a pdf

Hi All

I'm wanting to do the following, but struggling to figure the right way to go about it.

I want to embedded data from my MIS into a pdf's metadata (as scrnshot). I can create a standalone xml file with all the data I require, but I'm unsure how to automate that being embedded into a pdf's advanced metadata. I know this can be done, as it worked at a previous employer, but I didn't get chance to find out how they did it.

I'm wanting to do this so I can carry out a more advanced search of the metadata in Bridge.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Implementing PLUS Schema using the XMP SDK

Hello Adobies!

I'm currently working on making a customized Adobe Bridge add-on that is used to enter, and extract certain metadata fields. I've been successful with the DC, IPTC Core, and Photoshop schemas, however there does not seem to be sufficient documentation/examples of using the PLUS schema (Licensor, Copyright Owner...). In fact there is not a namespace even provided for PLUS. I've basically resorted to regex and interpreting the serialized string but this does not help in updating a files metadata.

Here is an example of what I am using to extract an IPTC Core property and populate the form:

I feel I must be close and maybe the path for plus:Licensor is not correct. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

how to install xmp to photoshop cs6

Hi, I understand absolutely nothing in these things, but I guess I need to install this panel to my photoshop folder somehow to create my file's metadata. At this moment when I want to add some file info fatal error appears "Please run the XMP Panels 4.0 STI first and restart your app".

The problem is - I do not have any XMP folder.

Could you please help me in this issue.

Hi All,

I'm looking to ingest hundreds of hours of video footage using Adobe Prelude and plan on adding metadata to each clip for easy searching latter in the workflow. Once the project is complete the client is in need of an excel document that contains each clip with all of the metadata we added during the ingest step of the workflow and where the clip is located on the hard drives that we have used.

Are there any automated steps to do this or is there an easy export to Excel option that I'm missing?

Hi,

I am new to XMP and not very technical, so please excuse me if this sounds like a stupid question!

I have managed to create my own custom panels for Photoshop using the Generic Panel method with my own custom fields and they work fine. However what I need to do now is create a custom panel that uses the exact same fields from some of the standard panels. The reason being is that I have 4 fields that need to be integrated into another non-adobe system (Extensis Portfolio) that recognizes standard XMP fields, but at present these 4 fields are spread across different standard panels and it would be much easier for the user in Photoshop if they were all together on one panel.

An example field is the "Additional Model Info" field that currently resides on the standard IPTC Extension panel. If I fill in a value in this field on a JPEG then open the the image in Extensis Portfolio, then the field is also filled in in a field called IPTC - Model Info, displaying a key of Iptc4xmpExt:AddlModelInfo.

Is there a way I can take this standard field and use it on a custom panel, so that it can still be filled in in Photoshop and the value viewed in Extensis Portfolio? Sure I can create a custom panel and create a field called "Additional Model Info" but I can't figure out how to connect it to the corresponding field in Portfolio. I tried changing the xmp_property name="Iptc4xmpExt:AddlModelInfo" but this just broke the panel.

Is what I am trying to do possible and if so how and can it be done using the Generic Panel method?

Is this the correct forum to post this question?

I am using WIN 7 Professional 64 bit and Visual Studio 2010.

I have been trying to produce the Visual Studio project from the GenerateXMPToolkitSDK_win.bat file.

It fails repeatedly. It produces the VC10 directory.

When I open the solution in VS2010 it has no project files?

Note that I do not have Visual Studio running at the time of the build.

Metadata Panel - Drop-Down & Boolean

I recently built a Bridge MetaData panel; however, I was only able to create text fields. Does anyone know how to build drop-down and boolean fields? If you could provide an example of the type of code you used, that would be very helpful. Just a side note, I see drop-down menus in the IPTC metadata panel, but I can't find the xmp file - Maybe as a generic panel supplied by Adobe this isn't supplied. If anyone knows where I could find the file, that might also be helpful. Thank you!

I use Dalim twist to embed data in the xmp of every asset, they say they are using current xmp standards. The xmp data appears to be nested and the core data displays fine in photoshop info, but the DAM we are using Media Beacon is having problems reading the embedded nested data within the image. Its become a finger point contest. I am not a programer, is there any easy way (application) that I can validate the xmp syntax to see if it meets current standards?

I have successfully built a custom XMP panel for Bridge and Photoshop and now want to refine the visual style of the File Info panel. How do I insert a title for a group of fields below a line separator? For example, inserting "PROJECT STAFFING" above a group of five project staffing fields. I would like the title to display flush left. What is the code to make that happen?

I ask this question because I came upon a surprise in reviewing the XMP and XML specifications.

XML, it seems, must start <?xml ...>

But XMP can start <?xpacket ...>

It seems to me that this means that an XMP document/packet therefore, while it contains valid XML entities, is not of itself valid XML (but could be converted by adding a correct prolog). Is this correct? Or are we depending on the language in the XML spec which says "XML documents should begin with an XML declaration" (should rather than shall)?

FileInfo XMPComboBox

Hello,
I am creating a FileInfo Panel, I noticed that when I create a XMPComboBox, if no one makes a selection the data isn't saved. Is there away to force the data to be written even if the field isnt changed? Example: I have a Gender combo box, Gender : Female is the first and default. If they want Female, they wouldnt change anything, so the data isnt being written.

I am guessing I could call the xmpWriteHandler, but I dont know syntax to have it store the value.

Am I Installing the Metadata UI Package Correctly?

I downloaded the XMP Metadata UI SDK CC 2014 and per the instructions in the pdf, "To see the results of these definitions in an Adobe application, install the Metadata UI Extension package

in one of the user-specific or general shared resource folders:" I copied (although the instructions say install) these files:

loc folder

schema folder

view folder

manifest.xml

to both of these locations:

WINDOWS: [user]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Extensions

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\XMP\Metadata Extensions

Then launched Photoshop, chose File -> File Info

And I see nothing new in the File Info panel.

What am I missing?

I have built a Custom XMP InfoPanel that shows up in CS6 Bridge just fine! But for ease of data entry we want it to show up in the Bridge MetaData panel. How is this done with the latest best practices?

I have looked everywhere found a number of ways, but ALL are out dated! The XMP FileInfo SDK doesnt cover this.

Crash in TIFF_MemoryReader::SortIFD()

I'm using the XMP library for a BlackBerry 10 application.

I have a JPG file for which the following method causes a crash in TIFF_MemoryReader::SortIFD():

The crash is here in my code:

// Create the xmp object and get the xmp data.

myFile.GetXMP(&meta);

And here is the stack trace:

Curiously the crash only occurs when I run the code on my BB10 device. If I run it on the BB10 simulator on my Windows PC, the crash does not occur.

Thoughts as to how I should try and narrow this down? Should I try and download the source code and debug the crash via source?

Can't see my custom xmp panel in file info in PS CC 2014.

I use VB.Net for my programming.

Using various XMLreaders I can extract data from various elements from an exported XMP file.

I am having problems with converting "&#xA" to a line feed in VB.Net and displaying the contents in a textbox.

Put simply the text is shown without any line spaces or carriage returns. (The "&#xA" is not shown in the text displayed)

The same data displayed in a message box show the line feeds/carriage returns?

I have scoured several forums to try to answer this problem, can anyone help?

Open file error when filename contains particular characters

In windows platform, when i try to open a file when the filename contains uncommon chars, such as ’ (different than ' ), the call to OpenFile returns false.

The filename is a wchar_t* , and I've tried any flavour of conversion to char* using WideCharToMultiByte, with no success.

Any hint?

Does the toolkit (5.5.0) support extended character set ?

XMP SDK; CC FileInfoPanel Error and Bridge Custom Panel Localization usage

I'm getting the following error when trying to create a custom XMP FileInfoPanel using a localization file.

An error occured parsing 'properties.xml':

TypeError: Error #1083

If I don't Include the localization lines

$$$/Custom/Schema/

in the label=' <but Before;> Design_Element=Design Element:'

The File Info Panel works, but gives the label of; Design_Element=Design Element:

When making a corresponding copy for Adobe Bridge custom panel. The label reads correctly as: Design Element:.

If the Design_Element= part isn't included in the properties.xml for the File info panel, It displays correctly, but not at all for the Custom panel.

I assume then the rest of the Localization part has to be used.

I added the $$$/Custom/Schema/ and $$$/Custom/Property/ to the xmp_property and xmp_schema Labels as shown in the generic example file.

and set in the manifest.xml file with the line for; localizationFile = "<customPanel>" using our company name.

and copied all these lines into a file customPanel_en_US.dat in the folder loc. and renamed it to our CompanyName_en_US.dat.

And since all else is the same, for the Localization.. I'm not sure why i'm getting the error.

Also can anyone indicate in a manual and page number how the languages informaton works..

why $$$ ?

Or /Custom/ for instance are they needed.. or should they really say.

I'm running Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion and Illustrator CC. I have a plugin built using XCode 4.6 and objective C++ (for UI elements) in which I need to read and possibly manipulate the XMP metadata of a linked image, normally tiff's.

I have successfully built and used the toolkit but I'm getting some strange behaviour, specifically random crashes (EXC_BAD_ACCESS) in unrelated object destructors after making calls to the toolkit. I am currently trying to get an older QT project running on a windows machine (it was developed for Mac OS X) and am stuck with some linker-errors (see below). I am using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate and used its compiler for the XMP SDK. Working on an old project and also not beeing that familiar with C/C++, I am not quite sure if there is a problem between the project and the XMP-lib or if something went wrong while compiling the lib-file. I definitely used the right Options (Release, Win32, static) and had no errors or warnings. There are also no errors concerning the Core-lib, just the for Files-lib.

Any ideas?

DocumentAncestors Not Adhering To XMP Specification In Photoshop

I'm currently in the process of writing a XMP sidecar parser. However I have an issue when it comes to the Photoshop namespace. Within the speificaion it says DocumentAncestors are as follows:

photoshop:DocumentAncestors -> unordered array of Ancestor

Which would be the following XML:

However the acutal ouytput I get from Photoshop CS is:

Problems registering XMPCore and XMPFiles .dll

We have used the XMP SDK to generate both the XMPCore and XMPfiles.dll's. However they will not register using regsvr32. We built them with Visual Studio 2013, running on Windows 8.1 64bit.

I've been trying to create a custom panel in Adobe Bridge. I downloaded the XMP-FileInfo-SDK-CS6, loaded the jar file into Adobe Flash Builder 4.7 (latest version), created a new project with NO modifications, and published it to the correct Custom File Info Panels folder on Windows 7. I then restarted Bridge, opened FileInfo in a photo, but when I navigated to the new panel that I just created, it fails to load correctly and hangs the entire application. The only way to close the window is to restart Bridge.

So just to be clear -- latest SDK, latest Flash Builder, latest Bridge version, new project, no modifcation, completely crashes Bridge. The GenericPanel is about the only thing that works without problem, but it's a little too limited for what I want to do (no business logic).

Not very reassuring that this is going to work at all. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there any workaround, or update I can try instead?

I created custom panel. It works great. But is it possible to include scheme of this panel to the file, so that the file can be opened on another computer with this custom panel (without additional xml of custom schema on this machine)?

I get a "Cant fit into specified packet size" when I add my own custom field in a different name space and use "myFile.PutXMP(meta);". The Schema example in SDK dumps RDF in separate files but I want to add a new field in the metadata of an existing file. How to expand the metadata content in the file from which metadata was read?

CS 6 Generic File Info - not keeping checkboxes

I have a Generic Panel, that has been working fine since CS3, but in CS6 the checkbox values are not retained when a file is reopened. Well that's not strictly true and the value "True" seems to be stored, but it no longer checks the box.

The code I am using is:

I'm looking for a simple query tool which I could use to explore XMP files, for Windos with GUI. I have been experimenting with SparqlGUI, but it doesn't seem to recognize the XMP language. Any ideas?

How to read AVCHD in XMP SDK sample programs

I am just getting started with the xmp sdk.

It seems to me that the XMP SDK sample programs , (e.g. ReadXMP) do not work with AVCHD video.

Is that right? Or am I missing something?

(Prelude CC puts metadata into sidecar .xmp files in ACVHD/BDMV/STREAM next to the .MTS files. That's the metadata I want to read.)

I have tried

ReadingXMP ../ACVHD

which returns: "Unable to open ../AVCHD"

I have tried

ReadingXMP ../AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS

which returns

"No smart handler available for ../AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS

Trying packet scanning.

../ AVCHD/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS is opened successfully

XMP dumped to XMPDump.txt"

Examination of XMPDump.txt reveals:

"Dumping XMPMeta object "" (0x0)"

Which means that the scan found no xmp info. Not surprising. There should be none in the .MTS file.

How do you get it to open up and scan the sidecar?

If I give it the sidecar explicitly

ReadingXMP ../AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.XMP

that also leads to the packet scan not finding any xmp info (which I have read elsewhere is because the xmp files don't include

an initial xmp packet tag.... a mystery for another day.)

So...

Is there sample code that handles AVCHD?

I see that there is an AVCHD_Handler.cpp in the XMPFiles library/framework, but I don't see how to get through to it.

The XMPFiles.cpp function FileIsExcluded(...) seems to rule out any path that is a folder.

MSVC solution files not generated

The current problem has been resolved.

It was due to a missing service pack for MSVC 2010.

There are still other problems thoug after fixing this issue and I will start I new question for it.

After a recent disk crash I have to re-install the XMP SDK and try to regenerate the libraries, but I have run into a problem.

After downloading the SDK and CMake, installing the third-party libraries zlib & expat, when I run the file
