Porting existing Android native app to Adobe AIR

I indent to port a existing Android native app to Adobe AIR for android. Reasons: To use my existing AS3 skills, "cost" for native is too high and soon port it to iOS.

Difficulties I face here:

Existing app package, say "com.mygame.myapp" has to be retained. By using FB with AIR SDK, we get a "air." prefix to the package name. It becomes "air.com.mygame.myapp".
Will this solution still solve the problem in AIR SDK removing "air." prefix from package name has any working solution!?.
The help link http://helpx.adobe.com/air/kb/opt-out-air-application-analytics.html is dead now. iOS specific is found here Opt-out | Adobe AIR app analytics | iOS
Please suggest me a Mac suitable solution.

In Android, using a ".keystore" file, we need to export as the ".APK" file. In AIR, if we publish using a new ".p12" signature file would it be compatible with Google Play, and it rules.

App's existing users should find difficulty in upgrading the app.

Another unanswered thread Possible to remove "air." appended on package and target a .keystore rather than .p12?

Thanks a lot.

AIR for Android - StageWebView and Video (YouTube iFrame)

Hey all,

I've been converting an iOS tablet app over to Android and I've noticed the StageWebView has some curious limitations, especially with anything that accessed the GPU (video, etc).

At first the embedded YouTube (iframe) videos would just show the first frame of the video dutifully with the usual play button. When pressed, the video went black and all I heard was audio. The reason I even mention this is it took quite a while to locate this Adobe page with a section entitled "Enabling Flash Player and other plug-ins in a StageWebView object". So I added in the application tag to enable the plugins with acceleration (<application android:hardwareAccelerated="true"/>) and now I can see video.

The erratic thing is on ICS (Android 4.0.x) the video plays in the StageWebView but it horizontally closes to about 20% its normal width. The video player doesn't scale to 20% width, the iframe is just somehow collapsing to that narrow width removing the ability to see 80% of the video or use the controls (e.g. no fullscreen button visible).

When tested on Jelly Bean (4.1.x) the video does not pinch horizontally, it (amusingly) plays horizontally backwards (mirrored) and upside down.

Previously with hardwareAccelerated="true" missing I could press play and then toggle fullscreen and the video would work fine. After adding hardwareAccelerated="true" I can no longer use fullscreen, it crashes the devices after locking up.

I also tried appending ?html5=1 to the YouTube videos to force GoogleAPI to choose a HTML5 player. This didn't do anything.

Has anyone found the sacred tome of knowledge required to get an embedded YouTube video to play in a StageWebView iframe?

Year class: A classification system for Android - any thoughts?

Facebook posted a few days ago how they no longer look at Android versions but instead look to hardware capabilities when developing their app(s):

Year class: A classification system for Android | Engineering Blog | Facebook Code | Facebook

A significant, and increasing, problem we have experienced over the past two years of deploying to Android isn't the fragmentation of the OS versions, rather the fragmentation of hardware.

Cheap Android devices are often shipping with v6 ARM CPUs but Air only supports V7.

These cheap Android devices can run the latest Android versions though which is hugely difficult to explain to clients. Clients think that since the latest devices can all run the latest Android version, why can't Air also support those same devices? A logical question to have but, understanding the lower power hardware doesn't always make sense to these clients.

Sure, it's a great marketing move by the hardware manufacturers who use the 'latest Android version' as a headline for shipping cheap old hardware! But, it makes it a nightmare for us Air developers.

I'm an electronics engineering graduate so I acutely understand both the hardware and software complications/implications of this situation but I'm wondering what we're going to do about.

A version of Adobe Air that would run on legacy ARM v6 would be great because a lot of cheap hardware still uses that form factor. Raspberry Pi for instance uses that CPU form and therefore being able to target that device with Adobe Air in the education market would be a HUGE opportunity! Also, the 'internet of things' could be a huge market for Air developers who could adopt such hardware as the Raspberry Pi. I do though, as I hint above, appreciate the development and resource costs for supporting that older CPU core though.

So, I wanted to throw this out there to see what other people think - both developers and Adobe themselves...

Is there a solution out there? Or can we, as a community, create a solution?

The app was just approved and is currently live, however, it doesn't show compatibility for iPhone 6 or 6+. Is this an existing Adobe AIR issue (unclear by the release notes and forums) or am I missing something else that is now required, possibly in my xml document? The latest beta version release notes aren't very clear either whether or not this is still an existing issue with the beta build. After many tests, I know that the app crashes when the "video.attachCamera" method is called.

This is the relevant piece of code:

this.cameraPos = CameraPosition.FRONT;

this.camera = this.getCamera(this.cameraPos);

this.camera.setMode(640, 640, 30);

this.video = new Video(640, 640);

this.video.attachCamera(this.camera); // crash!

private function getCamera(position:String):Camera

{

  for(var i:int=0; i<Camera.names.length; i++)

  {

    var c:Camera = Camera.getCamera(String(i));

    if(c.position == position) return c;

  }

  return Camera.getCamera();

}

The same code works fine in other Android devices. Listing all available cameras show that both (back and front) cameras are available in the S3. And the front camera works fine when I use CameraUI.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

But now I'm trying to do the same on Android and I'm so lost!

I tried some ANE's on the web but I haven't found any that is compatible with urban airship. How do I use Urban Airship on Android using Adobe AIR?

Alternatively, how can I in a manner as simple as it is possible to send notifications on Android from an RSS feed?

Thank you.
How to partially copy a SQLITE database/table

For that I have to copy some table data/rows from the database as SQL queries.

Requirement is a user can later import the stored things into the application, during which the copied table/data should be inserted into the new database.

I think retrieving each record individually and making insert query from the values and saving in a text file and then later at the time of importing executing those insert queries one by one

is a really expensive and time taking job.
How do you use AIR's WebKit/htmlloader?

Hi everyone,

A long standing issue in AIR has been the inclusion of an older version of WebKit. The request to update this library has come up many times in the forum and is in the top 10 on the community driven Uplist feature page. As with the recent and ongoing physics discussion, we're not committing to any changes purposed below at this time, as we're purely in an investigation mode at this time. We realize that this is an important feature and we need further clarification on what you're looking for. Please read on for questions from our development team.

We are exploring updating WebKit, but due to our modification of the WebKit source, this will be difficult, and updating WebKit will change the HTML DOM, possibly breaking content authored for our existing DOM.

So we are also exploring leaving HTMLLoader alone, for now, but providing a reasonable alternative.

StageWebView was originally written as a replacement for HTMLLoader on mobile (because we could not use our WebKit on mobile, StageWebView took advantage of the browser provided by the platform).

But it was extended to the desktop as an unsuccessful solution to this problem.

On mobile, content was probably newly written (so it could be tested with StageWebView), and the browsers were similar enough to our WebKit that the DOM impact was minor.

But on the desktop, forcing older content written for our WebKit to run on Internet Explorer 8 (as an example) was a disaster due to the differences in the DOM’s. We resolved this by making HTMLLoader versus StageWebView on the desktop a choice.

Which gets to the questions (for desktop development only).

Which is more attractive, an embedded web browser or using the system browser? Is it valuable to provide both?

For instance, using the native browser can save on code size (perhaps 6 MB), but you must create and test portable HTML, and you face the risk that future updates to the system browser breaks your content.

How much interop do you need between AS and JS?

Hearsay suggests another problem with StageWebView is there is no interop between ActionScript and JavaScript, whereas HTMLLoader had a lot of support.

Would StageWebView be sufficient if it exposed an ExternalInterface, or sandbox bridge, level of functionality? For instance, if AS could register a list of functions which could be called from JS (and vice versa), would that be enough? Or is there something else that HTMLLoader does that is essential?

For instance, one of the ideas being explored is to provide an entirely new class (perhaps as an ANE) which links an unmodified version of the latest WebKit source as a static library. By using unmodified source, we can more readily update to newer versions of WebKit. As well, if we leave the existing classes unchanged, we don’t risk breaking existing content. But if we use unmodified WebKit source, we may find some of HTMLLoader’s functionality impossible to match, which is why I’m interested in understanding the essential functionality, so we can decide if a sufficient, minimal (so it’s easier to support without customizing Webkit) interface for it.

Thanks,

Chris

Now I've created a new version of the app with a different technology (HaxeFlixel / OpenFL) which uses native C++ code.

The certificate I used for the AIR version is in "p12" format, and it seems that I need to use "jks" format. I tried using a p12 to jks converter I found online, which seemed to work, but when I try to submit the app I get an error saying that the certificates don't match.

Any suggestions on how I can update the app with a non-AIR app? Is it possible? Thanks in advance.

This behavior is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.

We noticed your app declares support for location in the UIBackgroundModes key in your Info.plist but does not include features that require persistent location.

It would be appropriate to add features that require persistent use of real-time location updates while the app is in the background or remove the "location" setting from the UIBackgroundModes key. If your application does not require persistent, real-time location updates, we recommend using the significant-change location service or the region monitoring location service.

My app isn't fit on any kind of app that can use background, but required the access to the background.

The app is a simple live chat agent console that need to retrieve each x time messages from the server, when the agent are on a different app the app need to run in background updating the agent status and checking for new messages or chat request.

The app use two UIBackgroundModes and works fine "location" and "audio" values but now I am trying to changing for a different mode like : "fetch" value but seems not working anymore in background.

What should be do now, because the app is a simple component of a large system that is working fine at this moment on IOS , Android and BB but seems apple isn't allowed to update anymore if I trying to access the background?

Developing for all four iPhone resolutions - how do you go about it?

With iPhone 6 out, developing for both iPhone 4, 5, 6 and 6 plus is a must. I'm pretty new to considering adaptive interfaces / content when developing apps, so I'm looking for strategies on how to approach it.

My current case example is a graphic novel-type app. The development process is going to be short, so I'm looking to make an app that just displays in fullscreen on all phones, not necessarily taking advantage of the higher pixel densities. A lot of the content is bitmap pages that need to take up the full screen on all resolutions.

So what are your general strategies for going about this? As I see it, the first issue is the two different aspect ratios. The iPhone 4 is 3:2 whereas all the others are 16:9, so my idea is to first detect if the ratio is 3:2 or not, and make the app either adapt to iPhone 4 or iPhone 5 depending on the result. Apple's automatic scaling of older apps should then take care of scaling up to iPhone 6 and 6+. Correct?

Secondly, what is the next step? Do I save all the bitmap pages of my graphic novel in a 640x960 version (iPhone 4) and a 640x1136 version (iPhone 5) separately, then load the right one at runtime depending on the aspect ratio detected?

Thirdly, if I work in Flash Pro with a 960x640 canvas size, do I then load the correct bitmap version and place it in the top left corner of the canvas because it will then extend to all the edges of the screen - or do I 'center' the iPhone 5 version outside the canvas to make it fit? (Meaning do I place the content at x = 0 for the iPhone 5 version, or at x = - ((1136 - 960) / 2) ?

I hope these questions make sense, especially the last one, and would like to hear how you would approach a project with a short deadline which just needs to run fullscreen on all iPhones.

iOS 8 GM and AIR 15 CameraRoll

I have builds under both AIR 14 and AIR 15 which both experience the same problem, so I' pretty sure it's iOS related. I'm running on an iPad 1458.

The issue is when loading images from the camera roll.
Upgraded to Windows 8.1 broke Flash/AIR/ANEs

So I make a blank file with nothing on it and it runs. Then I just add the .ane file into the publish settings and that breaks the app.

Anyone have any clue what is causing this. Is there some inherent incompatibility between AIR or ANEs and Windows 8.1? BTW I tested with the latest SDK 15.0.0.302 both in CC and CC2014.

launching Air Captive runtime by double clicking file does not pass location in arguments

I am trying to make my Air Captive Runtime Mac OS X app respond correctly when the user double clicks on a file type associated with the app.

I have set up the invoke event listener to capture location of the file that the user has clicked to launch the app stored in the event.arguments variable.

In the following simple test I just print out the length of the arguments passed in when the app is invoked. This is the behavior I am seeing:

1. when I launch the app from the command line with 2 args,

open test.app --args arg1 arg2

I get "2" as expected for the arguments length.

2. If the app is already open and I double click a file with a type associated with the app. It correctly invokes the app and passes in the path to the file that was clicked. Length is 1 as expected and the content is the path to the file.

3.
How to take screenshots for 4.7" and 5.5" ios devices?

If it didn't, I'd be able to move it around, take screenshots, and stitch the images together.

Does anyone have any tips? Maybe a way to ensure the flash player window doesn't resize to fit within the bounds of my screen?

Cheers,

Peter

How can we better support the distriqt extensions?

So after almost a year of using Uservoice, we've realised that it's not meeting the needs of supporting our extensions so we wanted to ask for suggestions on how we can better improve the experience and support we provide. We do strive to provide great support but comments from the community seem to indicate we're not meeting your expectations.

We are a small team and the extensions by no means pay our bills so what we are looking at is improving our usage of available tools to provide better support.

Our current thoughts are to move completely to github for issues and wiki, and start a public forum, perhaps a group on Google groups, but we are very open to suggestions at this stage.

We're hoping to update over the next month. Any suggestions you have as to better software or ways to utilise github will be most welcome, or even if there's something that you feel we're not doing well enough at the moment.

Cheers,

Michael

I installed the FlexSDK and AIR SDK with the Apache Flex installation binary on a Windows Vista 64-bit machine.

I can build and run an ad-hoc version of my iOS app on an iPhone 4 (iOS 8.0.2) and iPad 2 (iOS 8.1). I get the error.

ERROR ITMS-9000: "Invalid Code Signing.

I was using Flex 4.13 SDK and AIR 14 SDK. When I build a release version of my iOS app for the iTunes App Store, I received the following error.

ERROR ITMS-9000: "Invalid Segment Alignment. This app does not have proper segment alignment and should be rebuild with the latest version of Xcode. Please contact Developer Technical Support if you need further assistance."

To resolve this problem I had to install the Apache Flex SDK with Flex SDK 4.13 and AIR SDK 15.0.302. I installed the FlexSDK and AIR SDK with the Apache Flex installation binary.

For many of you, this should be enough to rebuild and run your application. However, after I built an ad-hoc version of my iOS app, and transferred it to my iPhone 4 (iOS 8.0.2) and iPad 2 (iOS 8.1), the app crashed immediately after launch.

If I rebuilt my App in debug mode (-debug-interpreter), it ran correctly.

However, I found a reference on an Adobe message board to a command line parameter, useLegacyAOT, which indicated that the poster had some success with this command line option after his app crashed.

I added the option, -useLegacyAOT yes to the build environment.

This option tells the compiler to disable fast packaging. However, the new linker in AIR 15.0.302 still aligns segments correctly.

Don't do this unless you have to. But this seemed to work for me, and I was able to submit my iOS App to the iTunes App Store.

This happens on Windows.

We tried all the workarounds we found but it did not work, I also tested with native installers and installation of native installer worked fine.

What I want is to know exactly how installation of .air files works, what programs perform this, how to configure them, how to read the logs, we need to figure out what is the problem and fix it.

P.S. it would be great if AIR developers could find a way to put a better error message.

Videos in StageWebView Playing Back at Double Size Under iOS 8

We're having an issue with videos in a StageWebView under iOS 8. Videos playing in a StageWebView control are playing at double size on iOS 8, resulting in the video appearing to be chopped off (see screen shot below).

We are using a StageWebView and calling the .loadURL(videoPath). Previously the video has always been sized to the viewport of the StageWebView control.

public var webView:StageWebView;

webView.viewPort = new Rectangle(this.x,this.y,374,221);

webView.loadURL(<<our file path>>);

Has anyone experienced this or have any idea what's going on? Thank you for your help.

Black screen on orient after startup on iOS

We have a very odd bug happening... when the app auto-orients during startup, *sometimes* we get a black screen with working audio. We first noticed this happening on the the iPhone 6+; our landscape app, when the home button is on the left side, will start with the launch image upside-down, then auto-orient, and sometimes go to black. Sometimes this doesn't happen. When the app is launched with the home button on the right side, the launch image comes up right-side up, and it never black screens.

On all other devices, we don't see this initial upside-down launch image, regardless of starting orientation. However, if we launch the app with the home button on the right, then orient the device so that the home button is on the left before the launch image appears, *sometimes* it will black screen.

A few other items of note:
- we aren't listening for any orientation events
- we aren't listening for any resize events
- we can completely avoid the problem by changing autoOrients to false in the app xml, we'd just rather avoid that if there's another easy fix that allows us to keep auto-orientation
