FAQ: Installing Elements 10, or What do all these disks do?

When you purchase Photoshop and/or Premiere Elements 10 as a boxed product, you get a fair number of disks. The main reason for this is that a boxed product purchase of Elements is dual platform, that is, it's for both Windows and Macintosh.

When dealing with a Photoshop and Premiere Elements combo purchase, you get 5 disks. Here is what they all do:

Disk 1 = Installs the 32-bit version of Premiere Elements 10 and Photoshop Elements 10 on Windows
Disk 2 = Windows 7 64-bit installer (skip Disk 1 if this is your OS). Installs the 64-bit version of Premiere Elements 10 and Photoshop Elements 10 (32-bit)
Disk 3 = Installs Premiere Elements 10 and Photoshop Elements 10 on Mac
Disk 4 = Installs Premiere Elemenst Content (DVD themes, menus, titles, etc.) for Windows
Disk 5 = Installs Premiere Elemenst Content (DVD themes, menus, titles, etc.) for Mac

When working with Photoshop Elements only, you have 3 disks. Here is what they do:

Disk 1 = Installs the 32-bit version of Photoshop Elements 10 on Windows. Also includes a trial installer for Premiere Elements 10
Disk 2 = Installs a trial 64-bit version of Premiere Elements 10 for 64-bit versions of Windows 7
Disk 3 = Installs Photoshop Elements 10 on Mac. Also includes a trial installer for Premiere Elements 10

And finally, when using Premiere Elements only, you have 5 disks. Here is what they do:

Disk 1 = Installs the 32-bit version of Premiere Elements 10 on Windows. Also includes a trial installer for Photoshop Elements 10

You will need your serial number to license the download. If you registered PSE with Adobe, you can go to

and look for My Adobe or where it says, "Welcome, < your name >", and work your way through the links to your user account/purchases and you should see it there.

Serial Number Invalid when upgrading to PSE 12 (MacOS)

Many users have reported that after purchasing Photoshop Elements 12 for MacOS, the serial number provided shows as invalid when installing Photoshop Elements 12.

We are aware of this issue and are actively working on a fix both on our store page as well as working to get a resolution out to the users who have been affected by this.

In the meantime, you're of course free to use the 30 day trial, which is a fully functioning version of PSE, and you'll be able to put the working serial number in once it has been made available to you.

We really apologize for the inconvenience this has caused some of you, and hope to have this resolved very soon.

FAQ: My files are missing from Elements Organizer, or How to reconnect your images?

What is Elements Organizer?

The Elements Organizer can be used to arrange, codify, systemize, group, and classify your media. When you import your images and video into the Orgnizer, you are adding information about your files to a catalog. Your files remain on your hard drive where they were, unless you are importing them from a camera, in which case the files are copied to your hard drive to a location of your choosing.

What is an Elements Organizer catalog?

The catalog is a database that stores information about the files you've imported into Elements Organizer. When importing a file, the first thing Organizer does is collect the file's name and location on the hard drive. If the file has any attached compatible metadata, such as keyword tags, these are imported as well. You can use multiple catalogs and your catalogs can be carried forward from version to version.

Why does Elements Organizer say my files are missing?

Since the catalog database only stores information about your file, and not the file itself, if any of that information is changed outside of Elements Organizer, the connection to the file is lost. There are three ways this can happen: the file name is changed, the file location is changed, or the file has been deleted. If you need to rename, move, or delete a file, you can do so within the Elements Organizer, and then the connection is not lost.

What is Reconnecting?

When a file has been renamed, moved, or deleted, the catalog database needs to be updated with that new information. The Reconnection process allows you to point out a file's new name, it's new location, or to delete the database entry on your file if the file no longer exists on your hard drive.

What is a user account?

A user account is your personal environment on a computer or network. It stores your files and settings behind a login name and, generally, a password. Each account also has set disk permissions.

What are disk permissions?

Each file and folder on your computer has a set of permissions, that is, rules for what you are allowed to do with that specific item. Whether or not you are allowed to see, open, delete, change, or perform any action with a given file is determined by permissions. Most disk permissions are determed by user groups. For example, if your user account has Admin access, this means the account is part of an Administrator group and therefore has read and write access to most files on the system. Multiple accounts on a given computer can be part of the same group (e.g. you can have multiple administrators, there is no such thing as "the administrator"). It is possible to have custom groups, with customized permissions. It is also possible for a given user account to be part of multiple groups. Specific permissions can be set on a per account basis as well. So user disk permissions can get pretty muddled.

Why create a new user account?

Sometimes the behavior of an application can be affected by disk permissions or your personal settings. A new user account will only have group permissions and default ("factory") personal settings. This helps to clean up the environment that an application is running in, making sure past changes are not the source of your issue.

The issue I am troubleshooting doesn't happen in the new user account. Now what?

While it is possible to migrate your files and settings to a new user account, this can often be more trouble than it's worth (and might migrate the problem at the same time). While we here at Adobe cannot fix user accounts (that is the domain of OS manufacturers and IT administrators), we can provide a list of possible solutions to try:

What is Photoshop CS# (PSCS)?

Photoshop is a professional tool used throughout many industries as the standard for digital image manipulation and painting. It has very rich, and often complex, tools and options. As such, it comes with a professional price tag.

What is Photoshop Elements (PSE)?

Photosohp Elements is a consumer product. It's made for users who don't need as many features and complex options. It has a simpler design, guided workflows, and an organizer to help you manage your files.

What are the some of the specific differences?

Here is a list of some of the major differences between Photoshop Elements and Photoshop:

Adobe Camera Raw differences between Photoshop and Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements comes with a database driven Digital Asset Management application called Elements Organizer. Photoshop comes with Bridge, a file navigation system that operates much like Windows Explorer or Macintosh Finder. While there are several functions that both Organizer and Bridge use, they are fundamentally different applications and serve different purposes.
Photoshop Elements does not support the following color modes: Duotone, CMYK, Lab, Multichannel
There is very little 16-bit support in Photshop Elements. You cannot create or convert an image to 16-bit, only open images that are already 16-bit. While working with a 16-bit image you cannot work with layers. The following tools do not work: Magic Wand, Selection Brush, the family of Type tools, Recompose, Cookie Cutter, Straighten, the brush based tools (Paint Brush, Eraser, Dodge, Blur, etc), or the shape based tools (Rectangle, Ellipse, Custom Shape, etc). Many filters do not work, mainly those featured in the Filter Gallery.
Photoshop Elements does not fully support Smart Objects. While you can open files that already have Smart Object layers, you cannot create Smart Objects nor open the files embedded as Smart Objects.
Photoshop Elements does not have a Channels panel. Nor does it have the Channel Mixer Adjustment/Enhancement.
Photoshop Elements cannot merge multiple/bracketed photo exposures into an HDR image. There is no support for 32-bit images. However, Photoshop Elements does offer Photomerge Exposure as a similar function.
Photoshop Elements does not use the same range of Content-Aware functions. While the Spot Healing Brush includes the Content-Aware option in both applications, Photoshop Elements does not have Conent-Aware as an option in the Edit > Fill Layer command (known simply as Edit > Fill in Photoshop). However, Photoshop Elements does use a Content-Aware Fill option when creating a Photomerge Panorama, this is not an option in Photoshop. Photoshop CS6 introduced the Content-Aware Extend and Move tools, which are not available in Photoshop Elements.
Photoshop Elements has fewer vector based tools. The Pen family of tools are not available. The Shape tools do create a vector shape layer, but the vector points cannot be edited individually. There is no Paths panel.
The licence from a boxed purchase of Photoshop Elements is multi-platform (as of version 9). This means you can install on either Windows or Macintosh or both without having to purchase a separate version. This is not true with Photoshop.
Photoshop Elements does not have the Subtract or Divide blending modes that were introduced in Photoshop CS5.
Photoshop and Photoshop Elements can both Transform selected pixels in the following ways: Scale, Rotate, Skew, Distort, and Perspective. Photoshop Elements does not have the Warp Transform option.
The Photoshop Elements Color Picker does not include the following options available in Photoshop's Color Picker: the Not a web-safe color alert icon, the Add to Swatches and Color Libraries buttons, and the Lab and CMYK models.
Photoshop Extended CS6 has the following panels that Photoshop Elements 11 does not: 3D*, Brush, Brush Presets, Channels, Character, Character Styles, Clone Source, Color, Layer Comps, Measurement Log*, Notes, Paragraph, Paragraph Styles, Paths, Properties, Styles, Timeline, and Tool Presets.
Photoshop Elements does not support Extensions such as Mini Bridge and Kuler.

What is the Auto-Analyzer?

The Elements Organizer has the ability to scan your videos and look for certain characteristics that may help you choose what will work best for you projects in Premiere Elements. This Auto-Analysis runs in the background of your system, scanning the video files in your catalog and applying Smart Tags when it finds certain criteria have been met. There are over 50 Smart Tags that can be applied, including whether the footage is blurry, includes a zoom or pan, has people's faces, etc. Additionally, it will break up your video up into individual scenes. It will also check your image files for people’s faces so you can identify in which pictures your friends and family appear.

While Auto-Analysis can be very useful for digging through your footage and breaking it down into more digestible bits, video files can be very large. Thus the system resources needed to analyze some video files can cause the rest of your system to perform slowly. Additionally, poor compression or incompatible codecs within the video files can cause errors with the Auto-Analyzer.

How do I customize Auto-Analysis?

The Auto-Analyzer can have its behavior modified in the Organizer Preferences (Mac OS: Adobe Elements [Version] Organizer > Preferences, Windows: Edit > Preferences > Media Analysis). Pictured here:

How do I turn off Auto-Analysis?

To completely disable the Auto-Analyzer, uncheck all of the options in the Media Analysis Preferences.

What if Elements Organizer is crashing or freezing?

If Auto-Analysis is really struggling with your files, it may cause the Elements Organizer to crash. And the crash may occur faster than you can get to the Preferences to disable it. In these cases, here are the steps you can follow to disable the Auto-Analyzer.

While Launching the Elements Organizer (click “Organize” on the Welcome Screen), hold down the Shift key.

NOTE: You have to perform this step quickly.

If you get the timing right, the Catalog Manager will appear before the Organizer opens. The Catalog Manager is the same dialog you see when you go to File > Catalog from within the Organizer.
In the Catalog Manager, click the New button. You may get a warning about your Backup/Synchronization settings. Just click OK.
Give the new catalog a name (it doesn’t matter what it is, just something you can identify later, such as “Test”). Click OK.
The Elements Organizer will launch with this new, blank catalog. But don’t worry, all of your files are still safe.
Go to the Media Analysis settings in Preferences and uncheck all options.
Go to File > Catalog and in the Catalog Manager, select your original catalog from the list (default name is “My Catalog”) and click Open.

If these steps do not address your Elements Organizer crashing or freezing issues, then you are dealing with a problem that doesn’t involve the Auto-Analyzer.

What if Auto-Analyzer is having trouble in Elements Organizer but I still would like to scan some files?

If you’ve had to disable Auto-Analysis because of some trouble with certain files, but you’d like Auto-Analyze other files, you can do so. Simply select the files you would like analyzed and go to Edit > Run Auto-Analyzer. This will just scan the files you have selected.

Why won’t Auto-Analysis work with my files?

As previously mentioned, Auto-Analysis may have issues with the way your video files have been compressed. Additionally, there is a file size limitation to what can be analyzed. The upper limit is about 4000 x 4000 pixels, or around 15.6 megapixels. While the Organizer will import much larger files and even generate thumbnails for them, the Auto-Analyzer will not read them. They will merely be skipped over. If you try to analyze a single file of such large size, you will be informed of this skipping due to potential errors.

FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?

What is a raw file?

A raw file is the unprocessed light data that was captured by your camera sensor. The only settings on your camera that apply to this file are aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. This means that any settings you may have applied to the file, such as white balance, or black and white effects, have no effect. Because this sensor data is raw, it must be processed or baked into an actual image file, that's where the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plug-in comes in.

What is Adobe Camera Raw?

ACR interprets the raw data and makes image information out of it. But every camera has a unique sensor and thus has a unique form of raw file. Even though camera manufactures may use the same file extension each time (e.g. Nikon raw files are always .NEF), each camera model has a different way of storing information. Because of this, we must continually update ACR for new cameras. As we add new cameras to the list (over 300 now) we update our published list of supported cameras. Additionally, with the changes to ACR, newer releases will not always be compatible with older versions of Photoshop Elements.

So, will the my raw files work with Photoshop Elements?

So if you are wondering if your camera is supported by ACR or will work in Photoshop Elements, first check this list:

What if my camera is not compatible with my version of Photoshop Elements?

Supposing you have a camera that came out after the release of a newer version of Photoshop Elements, so that your version of Elements is no longer recieving updates, you have two basic options:

Purchase the latest version of Photoshop Elements that supports your camera.
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)

There are many different combinations of Photoshop Elements (PSE) and the Operating Systems (OS) it is supported on. Here is a table to help identify which versions of PSE are supported on which versions of Windows and Macintosh. By "supported", we mean that the application is designed and thoroughly tested to work on. Just because a platform is "unsupported" does not necessarily mean that it will not work. What it does mean is that you operate the application on that platform at your own risk. In most cases, a version of PSE is "unsupported" on a specific platform simply because it was released before that version of the OS.

What is Activation?

When you purchase an Adobe product, your license allows you to install on two computers. To enforce this limit (and prevent others from using what you have paid for), your serial number comes with two Activations. Activation happens when you launch the product for the first time (it does not happen during the installation process). Your Adobe product contacts the Adobe activation servers and lets us know that you are using the product on a specific computer (using an anonymous, unique machine code). If you'd like to move your product to a new computer, simply uninstall the application, which lets you deactivate it from the computer.

I have already installed on two computers, and one of them crashed, what do I do?

Often you will find yourself in a situation that a computer has crashed and you had an activated Adobe product on that system. Depending on how much you use the Adobe product, this could be a major issue. If you have crashed your first computer and have not yet installed on a second, then there is nothing to worry about, simply install and use the product as normal. Obviously you can't uninstall and deactivate the product on the dead computer. At this point, you will have to contact our customer service department to have your activations cleared up from the back-end servers. This should be a very quick, painless process to accomplish. FAQ: What information should I provide when posting, or What do you need to know to solve my issue?

When asking a question on the Photoshop Elements user-to-user forums, you can make it easier for folks to help you by proactively providing the answers to the following questions:

What version of Photoshop Elements? Include the minor version number (e.g., Photoshop Elements 9 with the 9.0.3 update).
Have you installed the recent updates? (If not, you should. They fix a lot of problems.)
What operating system? This should include specific minor version numbers, like "Mac OSX v10.6.8"---not just "Mac".
What kind(s) of image file(s)? When talking about camera raw files, include the model of camera.
If you are getting error message(s), what is the full text of the error message(s)?
What were you doing when the problem occurred?
Has this ever worked before?
What other software are you running?
Tell us about your computer hardware. How much RAM is installed? How much free space is on your system (C:) drive?
Has this ever worked before? If so, do you recall any changes you made to PSE, such as adding Plug-ins, brushes, etc.? Did you make any changes to your system, such as updating hardware, printers or drivers; or installing/uninstalling any programs?

Screenshots and sample movies are often very useful in showing exactly what you're seeing, and can thus make getting an answer faster and easier. FAQ: How do I capture and post a screen shot or video?
