What are the exact symptoms you see?
Can you see the Flash animation at http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/find-version-flash-player.html ?

I have apparently installed the latest Flash - ie I get to the page where I
am told that the installation is complete and would I like to rate my
experience. However when I then try to play something - eg BBC iplayer -
that relies on Flash, I get a message saying that I need to install an
updated version of Flash.
The weblink you sent appears to be broken, but when I have gone to the
Adobe Flash website in the past and it asks do you see a movie playing in
the box or an error message, the box is totally empty - ie no movie and no
error message either.
I have also tried
- a system restore then trying to update Flash
- deinstalling Flash and then reinstalling Flash
Neither resulted in my computor being able to play Flash content.

Hi Pat
I went to the link on the forum and it worked from there. As I said blank
box instead of movie BUT NO ERROR MESSAGE. What am I supposed to infer
from the fact that there is no error message?
Is there no answer to my problem apart from paying $39 to Adobe? (which I
rather resent doing as I could play flash fine before the update).
Aplogies if you don't know the answer to this I just can't understand why I
don't even see an error message, just a blank shaded box.
Kind regards
Katrina

What is your Windows version?

What is your display adapter, device driver version & date? See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/945765

My windows version is Windows Vista
I have 6 files in C:\Windows\system32\Macromed\Flash. They are
Flash_32_11_4_402_278.ocx Active Control
Flash Install text document
FlashPlayerUpdateService Application
Flash_32_11_4_402_278ActiveX.dll Application Extension
Flash_32_11_4_402_278ActiveX Application
mms.cfg CFG file
My display driver is Intel Corporation
Driver Date 02/01/2008
Driver Version 7.14.10.1409
I have been to the Intel site. I am assuming that the "Intel Core 2"
sticker on my laptop means that I have "2nd Generation Intel Core", as that
is the only one that looks probable. I have to take the children somewhere
now, but will look at updating my driver later and let you know how that
goes. Thank you so much for your help.

Intel Core is the processor; you don't need to concern yourself about that.
It is the display adapter (graphics card) driver that needs to be updated (yours is 4½ years old).
Check for an updated driver at http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect/graphics

Hi Pat, I appreciate you sending the link. I've tried to update using it
in both Firefox and Explorer. I needed to install java in both. On
Firefox, I could install Java, but then the link would not load. On
Explorer my computer encountered an error in running Java and would not
install it. I'm wondering if my computor has become obsolete, or if I can
update the disply adapter in some other way?

Yes, you can, if you know exactly what the display adapter model is. Then you can download it from http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/graphics/
Another way of updating drivers is using a driver update tool like DriverMax; I have used it for many years. The free version allows you to download two drivers per day. (But don't bother with other drivers, just the graphics driver.)
