Losing my mind!

I have installed the flash player 11.8(Or whatever it is) MULTIPLE times "successfully", but still get messages on different websites telling me I need flash.  I have been going through the forums and help trying suggestions with no success.  I have windows 7.  What am I doing wrong?!  Thanks.
