I don't understand, why do you need an email (address?) or password to access Flash Player?

I try to access the update. The window gives my name accurately and a box

for password. I enter the password and I get a reject message. I changed

my password and the same problem persists.

What is your operating system?  How do you "access the update"?

Can you post a screenshot of what you see: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1070933

P.S. are you installing the update as an Administrator user?

All I know is that a manuscript was sent for me to read. It said I had to

use Adobe. When I clicked the message said I needed an update. I tried.

A box with my name appeared and an empty box that said password. No

matter what password I tried, past or present, it didn't work. I then

tried to get a new password and was told that the new password was

verified. Then, the new password didn't work. UGH.

I am having the same issues with trying to download the update. There is a box for email and password, and when I  put in password it still doesn't work. I even changed the password. Has anybody suggestions?

The password prompt is supplied by the operating system, and is intended to protect you from accidentally installing software.  You will get this prompt for any installation outside the App Store context.

If you do not need to enter a username or password when starting your computer, you can probably just leave the password field blank when acknowledging this prompt.
